Love this story. The world building is amazing and so complete. The illustration style fits the story so perfectly. I can't wait for volume two to learn more about Camille and her families!!

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Muted: Volume 1 is a stunning graphic novel about Camille; a young witch from a family of witches. Camille lives with her cousin (who she's very close to) and Aunt (who despises her niece) and certainly doesn't have it easy.
When Camille attempts a summoning of a demon during a blood ritual, it goes very wrong, and instead of summoning a demon, she somehow manages to summon vines and leaves. She is understandably upset as this is a very important ritual in her family and flees to the swamps where she collapses. When she's brought back to the house, her other aunt takes her to stay with her for a while and the only happiness this brings Camille is that she gets a break away from her Aunt and gets to spend time with her beloved familiar Toben. But the time away brings much more into Camilles' life: love, answers, reunions, and time to find out what really happened to her sister and mother when they were taken from her.
This was such a great start to a series of graphic novels and I can't wait to read on in volume 2. The use of colour used is perfect for the atmosphere of the book and the aesthetics of each witch family was perfect!

I really liked the drawing style of this book. I like stories about witches of all kinds, and I like graphic novels and comics, so I had a good time reading this.
Storywise I say it’s pretty basic with dead family members, finding oneself and a purpose but sometimes the familiar is nice. Not everything has to be groundbreaking to be good and enjoyable.

The story starts off a bit slow, and has its ups and downs, but the script is so well crafted that the pages fly by without you even realizing it. It's one of those plots that surprises you non-stop to the point that you lose track of time, because the characters become so familiar, so close, and in such a short time, that you simply immerse yourself in their world without difficulty.

I loved the art! It felt like some scenes went by faster than I would have preferred, but the themes of the story are lovely. Looking forward to seeing how a romance element may progress in future volumes.

This was a fun concept, and I enjoyed the artwork. However, there were several typos throughout. There was a lot of setup in this first volume, and hopefully, subsequent volumes will be able to address all the different pieces in more detail. I'm interested to see where this series will go! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC in exchange for a review.

Muted, Vol. 1 is an interesting sapphic urban fantasy story, with elements of mystery, magic, romance and potential past crimes.
Cammie / Camille is a young witch in training, who is about to be put through the family ritual to summon a demon who will grant her a wish. However, Camille is really nervous, and her aunt is an overbearing w-itch who is basically controlling Camille's life, including keeping her separated from her familiar.
There's a lot of back story to Camille – a fire when she was young that killed her mother and sister, leaving her alone, as well as having spent her life living with her overbearing aunt and kind cousin. Her life isn't happy, but it gets worse when she goes into the ritual and it doesn't go as planned. Camille decides to run rather than face her aunt's wrath and ends up in a dangerous situation. As a consequence, another aunt decides to take Camille back to her family home to recover. While there, aside from recovering, she discovers some long-hidden family secrets and reconnects with her familiar.
Along the way on her journey of self-discovery, Camille meets some witches from other covens/families and finds herself making some interesting friends...and a potential new girlfriend.
I liked Camille. She was bright, spunky and brave, but she did become a bit too much of a stereotypical moody, misunderstood teenager sometimes. I also liked a lot of the secondary characters; they all seemed quiet individual, unique and interesting in their own way.
Overall, the plot and characters are good, but I did have a few issues that stopped it from getting the 5* rating it could have.
1) I have no idea what the title refers to, and I always find that when I do understand it makes a lot of other things make sense.
2) This may be an ARC, but there were A LOT of editing issues. I counted at least a half dozen typos within the text, which is quite unusual for a graphic novel / manga, even an ARC.
3) The cliffhanger ending felt sudden and anti-climactic. I don't mind a cliffhanger, especially in a comic book or graphic novel, since it's generally expected, however – Camille is warned that her aunt knows a secret, but WE, the reader, have no idea what secret this is referring to. Because of the character who says it – her cousin, the only one who doesn't know the big secret that Camille's recently discovered – we have no idea what this is referring to, which means that the warning about her aunt falls completely flat. It would have been an exciting, dramatic ending if we only had even a hint of a clue as to what secret was about to be discovered.

I want to start out by saying my formative years were spent in Baton Rouge and just outside New Orleans, so when I saw a graphic novel set in Louisiana with magic and a sapphic main character, I knew I had to check this book out. And I am so glad I did.
The art is beautiful. Not just that it's beautifully drawn, but it truly captures the southern gothic feel that I so crave in a story like this.
Camille is such an interesting protagonist, and I like that we are learning her past as she is. I know that is a common device, but it works SO well in this story. Nyra is a delight, and I will fall for any romantic lead who calls the other "princess". The world that Miranda has created is so rich and well thought-out.
I cannot wait for the second volume of this story.

You can definitely tell that this was a Webtoon - not to say that Webtoons aren't great! The writing left a lot to be desired and the story moved rather slowly.

I think I summed it up pretty well above. This was a fun read. Camille, an orphaned witch is slowly unraveling trauma from her past while also discovering details about her lineage. A very promising start to the series and I'm very much looking forward to the next installments.

Muted is a long-running Webtoon serial about 21-year-old witch Camille whose self and secrets falter under the heavy expectations of the Severin family line: summon a bird demon, make a deal to the prosperity of the family, and live a lie. Collecting about half of the first season of the webcomic, Muted: Volume 1 is a gorgeously-illustrated and compelling story about self-discovery through facing generational trauma, loving honestly, and being open to differences. Miranda Mundt’s lush illustrations of New Orleans and Louisiana swampland combine with dynamic panels of magic, blood, wandering spirits, and mischief both foul and fair. Just like the Cafe du Monde’s beignets, this volume leaves you craving more.

a coming of age story of lost & found family, queer love, magic, grief and mystery
13 years after a fire kills her entire family, camille severin is studying under her aunt as heir matriarch of severin witch clan
after a summoning ritual gone wrong, camille is sent to her childhood home in Louisiana to stay with her cousin silvia
reuniting with her familiar, tobben, camille must over come her past to work toward rebuilding her future and bring the witch clans closer, especially after a buried secret is undug

This story was so great! The art style was really good, and I loved the character design. The story was really good as well. I liked the elements of magic and witchcraft. Camille was a really interesting character. I definitely want to continue with this series.

Oh. My. GLOB. This is such a cute book! The art is very dynamic and colorful, setting the tone for much of the story. It’s honestly beautiful. I sat down in one sitting and read over 150 pages.
Romance is not usually in my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed the light aspects of flirtation and tension among the MC and some of the characters. The larger theme of the story was that Camille does not feel as if she fits into her family. I love the magical aspects, especially how one family has alligator familiars. The characters were diverse, with many different races, sexualities and disabilities represented.
The plot moved at a good pace to keep readers interested, the setting of New Orleans felt perfect for the epicenter of magical drama. Overall, it would definitely recommend this!

I read this originally on Webtoon and was beyond excited to hear it was getting a print version. This dark witchy sapphic story has been beautifully reformatted and has gorgeous page layouts.
Camille has to face her past and her family to find herself within a magical society with soooo much generational trauma. Families with matriarchal systems and unique magic to each bloodline, some with darker rituals than others.
The new bonus chapter was unbelievably cute and gave a wonderful new insight to Camilles relationship with Nyra. The game being called apologies and it's use in the story was adorable and made me cackle!

Really enjoyed this graphic novel. Sapphic, witchy, and beautiful art. I love that this is a matriarchal society and almost all the characters are women. The art is gorgeous and the colors are vibrant. I love the FMC and am excited to see her growth. I'm enjoying the plot as well and am curious where it will go in the next volumes.

This was everything I wanted from a graphic novel and more 😍
Muted follows Camille, a witch from the Severin family, who performs a demon summoning blood ritual that goes wrong. Instead of a demon, Camille summons plants and vines, scared she flees into the swamp and learns secrets about her past.
The author's strength is the diverse cast of characters this story develops. All of which are well developed and feel real and like their own persons and personalities. The author does not shoehorn queer and disabled characters into harmful stereotypes.
The art style is beautiful and the use of colour pairs well with the story. Even from the cover the stark red contrasting with the more cool toned background. I loved how each witchy family had their own aesthetic, it sets them apart and doesn't create any unnecessary confusions.
The plot is fast paced and very engaging. Moderate-high stakes and a fresh take on modern witches. Looking forward to reading future volumes.

A solid read. Gripping narrative and interesting artwork, I was hoping for a little more depth out of 300ish page book but it definitely feels like it’s building up to something big and I’m here for it.
Thank you for the opportunity.

Muted (vol 1) is a stunning graphic novel with an immediately gripping storyline and beautiful artwork.

Muted: Volume 1 is perfect for fans of sapphic witches (and plants!). Early on, it is apparent that our main character, Camille, hasn't had the easiest life. There is a lot of heaviness in her life due to a variety of things out of her control. Through it all there are bright spots we see. I absolutely adore Camille's familiar (just the cutest little woodpecker) that is by her side through sorting out the mysteries in her life. The art is absolutely stunning. I love the character designs (no "same face" syndrome here!) and I appreciate the diversity. I loved getting to know the magic system and see the world building which I suspect will continue through the series. Camille and most of the supporting cast are loveable, I found the pacing to be great (which can be harder with graphic novels), and the ending left me looking forward to reading the next volume. I get a strong sense of found-family and look forward to hopefully seeing more of that in the future.
Volume 1 appears to be just the start of Camille's story, and I cannot wait to see where things go. I see this Graphic Novel series quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
