Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of the book!
Oh man, as an African American woman I desperately wanted to love this book. This author has tremendous potential! But some things just didn't work for me. 3 stars.
The pros:
-BIPOC author
-BIPOC female leads-yes! Sign me the eff up
-Globe trotting mission was fun
-Gorgeous cover art
-World building and lore was there. I often wished we delved deeper. Perhaps with less cities and more time spent in each city they did visit.
-I really, really loved the opening chapter of this book. What a way to dive in.
The cons:
-The twins interior voices were too similar. Their personalities were different, yes, but the way that they spoke-I felt they could have been interchangeable. E.g. one curses like a sailor and the other...does too. One is obsessed with appearance and her clothing brands are often mentioned, but when the other twin sees her in her interior monologue she mentions how her twin "put on her Gucci shades."
-With the exception of the twins, all the side characters/lovers/villains felt underdeveloped.
-The most glaring thing I couldn't get over was the lack of explanation for why nobody TOLD God and Lucifer that someone was trying to kill them. Seemed like it could have solved a lot of trouble. Or at least if we'd had an explanation I wouldn't have kept going back to wondering about that.
Other thoughts:
I'm interested to see what this author does next

The devil's angel was a good read for me!
I enjoyed the writing, the plot and the characters. I thought that the story was unique and well executed.

Having Afro – Latinx twin sisters – Caridad and Mercedes, as our FMCs, was a nice change. While I’m not huge on Christian themes, it worked amazingly well with this book. Full of action, history, and family, Margaret Bernard has us travel around the world with the twins battling Angels and Demons while searching for the Rapier and the Ark of the Covenient. I was on my toes with this one. Every other chapter was a twin’s perspective. We learn that their mother passed away immediately after their birth giving them the jobs to be Celestial Hunters. The girls first lived in New York with their Tia Esme before spending the rest of their time at boarding school training to hunt and kill both Angels and Demons. Caridad could only sense and kill the Demons while her sister, Mercedes, could only sense and kill Angels. They must come back together to save God and Lucifer. I can not wait for book 2 already, the way the book ended, we know they have more to do.

I ate this story up. I enjoyed the story of the estranged sisters having to reunite and they can't trust anyone else to solve a mystery. Outside of the Twins normal weapons, the additional magic that was throughout the book was nicely added, I loved how it came into play throughout the story.
The beginning of it talking about pregnancy was a bit iffy to me because that's content I'm not usually interested in but it was a short part and was very important to the entire story and how the Twins got their role, so it did fit here.

Devil's Angel is a books about the bonds of sisterhood disguised as a fantasy. Featuring angels, demons and epic battles this books still manages to be about relationships. It end's kind of on a down note but as someone who read primarily romance I like everything tied up in a happy bow and this story is clearly just beginning. I expect this will be the beginning of an epic fantasy series that is somewhere between YA and adult.

I’ve been trying to limit myself to the books that sound just exactly on point with my favorite genres, and this is one such book. I really enjoyed Caridad and Mercedes; they are definitely capable and focused assassins. The plot of this book is also interesting with both angels and demons coming together to try and form Heaven and Hell the way they want them to be. Add in some kick butt scenes and non-stop action, this is a wild ride. I do wish there was a little more down time and getting to know the characters a little more, but this is still very enjoyable. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I enjoyed the concept of the book, but I couldn’t get into it. I DNF’d it because I couldn’t immerse myself in the story.
// Spoiler //
I love that the main characters are Cuban and that her mother came to give them a better life. As a Latina myself, it made me happy to read. I also enjoyed the switch between English and Spanish, which effectively demonstrated the characters’ heritage while also showing that they are American-born. The story is definitely unique, I did enjoy the fact that the girls were like officers and keeping the order of both heaven and hell. Overall this might have just been a book I personally was not into!
