I wanted to check this book out because I have read and enjoyed other books in the series. I appreciate that this series invites experts to create bite-size introductions of topics for both kids and their adults who are trying to help them navigate the world. This book tackles several topics that might initially be difficult for kids to grasp like "bias" and "social hierarchy". However, Dr. Avriel Epps breaks these definitions down in a way that makes them accessible for younger readers. The intro and outro for the grown ups helps provide context on a deeper level for AI bias so that the adults assisting the child reading have a better idea of the topic themselves.

Thank you NetGalley, DK Children, and Avriel Epps for access to A Kids Book About AI Bias.

A Kids Book About AI Bias is an informative, easy-to-digest book that introduces the topic of biases and AI Bias. This will be a fantastic tool for libraries and educators to foster discussions with students.

A Kids Book About AI Bias would be also pair amazingly with the A Kids Book About AI to explain the background of AI and then follow with how AI is impacted by biases.

A Kids Book About AI Bias is a great introduction to the challenges of AI. I haven't read the other books in this series but I imagine that they are also a simplified take on a very complex topic that helps introduce readers to thinking more about a topic -- that's certainly what this book did for me and would do for other readers. Though the format is more like a picture book the reader's age could be from upper middle school through high school and adult. As I'm a teen librarian, I could see using this as a jumping off point for a secondary unit on AI, ethics in technology, current events, human rights, and so many other topics. I think this would be a great book to add to any secondary collection -- and possibly younger if patrons are very interested in technology, AI, modern events, etc. Very well written, thought provoking, and engaging. Highly recommend!

This book is a great way to introduce children to issues that affects society such as biases. It's even more important to teach children the issues with biases now that the world has become more technical. It does talk about how AI works so there might be some things that needs to be explained in more depth for children to understand but I found the book to be informative and well explained.

This is a very introductory look at understanding bias and inequality in technology and AI. I will preface my review by saying that I really enjoyed what I read, and I liked the layout of color and imagery. However this was not quite a picture book and not quite a reference book.

There were lots of things to consider--important things such as the fact that AI facial recognition is modeled on White faces, and much of technology is controlled by people with power and money. The reflection that children who are BIPOC may see is that there is something wrong with them for being different and the author wants to assure her audience that the problem is with society and the way we are starting to create our technology and social media biases. All very good points.

However, I felt that this should have been the introduction for a longer novel with research-based evidence (much of this is research-based but I didn't see the resources used for research). This book brings up many fascinating areas of discussion including "who is benefiting from excluding some" and "how can we work together to create a more equitable AI platform?"

I think this book invites more discussion, and I would love to hear more from the author. If I was looking for a reference resource for my non-fiction collection in the library, I would have to sadly pass this by. However, if Dr. Avriel Epps continues expanding on her idea and vision, I will be thoroughly interested in reading more of her thoughts.

"A Kids Book About AI Bias" is an easy to digest about what AI bias is and how it happens. If someone is struggling to understand the topic or doesn't know much about it, this would be a good introduction, but it is not designed for in-depth research. The book includes an introduction and conclusion that is directed towards grownups and provides a little more context on the topic. I wish there were more concrete resources to do learn more about the topic covered in the conclusion.

“a kids book about AI BIAS” is just that. Dr. Avriel Epps defines bias as being a function of our social hierarchy and then explains what can happen when those biases show up in tools that use artificial intelligence. There is an excellent example about facial recognition tools (even in social media) that were trained on white faces, so these tools sometimes have trouble with the faces of people of color.

There is an introduction and a conclusion just for adults to help kids process the information. The style of the book is very minimalist, but engaging. The story encourages children to be proactive in their interactions with technology (something that is desperately needed). The book is NOT anti-AI, but rather seeks to raise awareness about potential biases and offers suggestions to appropriately address them.

Classroom Considerations: “a kids book about AI BIAS” would be great to have even in a middle school or high school classroom. Older students don’t seem to give much thought to biases in AI, but it is so important that they do. Explanations are simple, but don’t talk down to kids.

This book is a great discussion starter about AI bias for parents and children or teachers and students.

I received an advance review copy for free from Netgalley and DK Children, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Too basic of a book even for younger students. The content is not enough to keep you engaged. So much more could be included in order to make this a worthwhile read.

A clear explanation and approach to understanding the concept of AI and AI bias. This is a must read for all children and their parents.

A great into to children about AI bias, though I wish it included a little bit about how kids can learn more or help out (same with the parents)
