A lot of readers complain when FMCs are overly confident, and so self-assured, and while I think most times it is unfair I find it a necessary criticism here.
Elikki is insufferable, if we as readers had the context as to her personality earlier, that would drastically alter the experience. I most likely would have enjoyed it more if that background knowledge sooner. Instead, the impulsive and callous way she goes about early interactions with Barra is more frustrating.
I cannot believe the origin of the initial conflict between the romantic pairing is something thought of as being acceptable in any capacity. Insta-lust as a tropes can be used without making it one protagonist act jilted when she gets turned down while drunk, to a person she BARELY KNOWS.
It's really not the cozy read that I expected. It was more uncomfortable for me than anything. The tropes all stack up into a really bizarre pile that didn't make me feel at all lighthearted.
There's definitely a market for romances like this as this one has a lot of higher praise from other readers, I just am not a part of it.
I definitely wouldn't equate this title to being for fans of the other series listed in the blurb, that is for sure.

Elekki, a fiery, curvy elf, travels the land showcasing her handcrafted magical jewelry. But when a greasy, obnoxious noble pushes her too far, her temper—and her magic—flare, leaving him with a broken wrist. Enter Barra, a towering lavender half-giant, who steps in…and in a later altercation, he breaks the man’s other wrist. Unfortunately, their outburst earns them a price on their heads as the vengeful noble sets a bounty against them.
Forced to travel together, Barra quickly falls for Elekki, but she’s a free spirit with no interest in being tied down. Could her heart ever change? Could she allow herself to fall in love?
I loved this EXTRA spicy, sweet-as-honey, cozy fantasy—especially Elekki’s unapologetic confidence and the way Barra celebrated her curvy figure. Hoping for more stories set in this world!

4/5⭐️
This was an adorable cozy romantasy between a plus size elf and an anxious half-giant on the run from the law (but in, like, a fun way). Elikki and Barra were so cute, I love a pairing between an outgoing/confident girl who is capital T Trouble and a shy/quiet guy who will protect her at all costs.
Also, this book is so full of representation! Basically every character is queer (my ideal world), Barra has anxiety (same) but doesn’t let it control his life (we’re getting there), and Elikki is a curvy plus size girl and not only is she not ashamed of it but she owns it and loves it about herself (something we should ALL aspire to do).
This book was just such a feel-good romance with enough conflict and tension to keep it interesting but not so much it detracts from the romance. My only qualm is that it felt a little long at times compared to the amount of plot material but, honestly, I love fluff so I can’t complain too much!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC of this novel in exchange for an open and honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I loved this book so much and wish I could read it again for the first time! It's cozy, it's spicy, it's romantic--it's everything I want from a book right now. I loved the diversity in characters (plus size, bisexual, lesbian mas) and I hope that Vale continues to write books that are so needed in this world. I have been recommending this to all of my friends and we'll definitely buy it for our library collection!

This was such a cute little story! A chance encounter and some bad luck lead two strangers into going on the run together where they find true friendship and maybe even something a bit more.
I loved how the MMC was very much the “gentle giant” type but also so caring and thoughtful all throughout the story.
I also really enjoyed the fact that while they make it clear that the FMC is a fuller figured character the author doesn’t do it. Elikki is confident and comfortable in her own skin. She’s beautiful and she knows it!
If you’re looking for a quick, fun little romance with chance encounters and endless adventures then this is the book for you.
This is an ARC review and I leave my honest review voluntarily.

This is a cutesy romance between an elf and a half-giant.
It is instant attraction from Elikki quickly followed by instant love from Barra.
I liked their story, but I didn't love it. At some points Elikki was just hard for me to connect with. She's very impulsive. While I understand these moments are a result of her past, I just felt she could he a little too harsh towards Barra. And it was almost too casual on her end. I felt his character was very open about not wanting to be used (maybe I read it the wrong way) but it seemed that's exactly what she was doing.
It's a quick read and the pacing is steadily executed. There's lots of representation for all. Take that as you will.

This 👏 Book 👏 Was 👏 So 👏 Wholesome
Elikki is a full-figured, confident, and sexy elf who sells her magical jewelry in the town market when she catches the attention of Barra, a reserved half-giant. After an obnoxious customer aggressively touches Elikki without consent, she’s forced into a situation where she uses her magic to defend herself. The customer, enraged at his injury, presses the town constable to go after Elikki. Barra helps her escape, and the two begin a road trip together, evading bounty hunters, honing magic, and discovering their growing feelings for each other.
I loved how this book highlights body positivity and queer love 🏳️🌈! Having a full-figured FMC is rare, and when there is one, it’s often mentioned only briefly at the start of the book. But Kristen Vale does an amazing job of consistently describing Elikki as beautiful and curvy throughout the story. The spice 🌶️ was steamy and really added to the excitement. This book is also for the foodies! I am absolutely craving a slice of lemon cake 🍋 after reading this!
This is just a feel-good book about kindness, love, and acceptance. It’s an easy, fun read that I wholeheartedly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley, Kristen Vale, and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to review this eARC.

A cozy fantasy that’s as spicy as it is sweet, A Tale of Mirth & Magic was the perfect read between all of the heavier fantasies that I’d been diving into lately.
A traveling metal mage of an elf is selling her wares in a town market when a particularly nasty customer decides to act a fool and cause a scene. Unfortunately for Elikki, she does have a wee bit of a temper and, like with most magics, her particular brand works to defend herself causing injury to the man. Barra happens to witness the altercation and attempted coming to Elikki’s aid, but E fully embodied the “strong, independent woman” characterization and handled the problem herself.
Only, that rude man happened to be well-connected and, with his pride damaged, of course went on the warpath. Barra intervenes again when the man comes looking for Elikki at an inn later that evening leading local law enforcement and steps in to give her time to flee. Now, they’re both on the run from a man hellbent on vengeance for his bruised pride (and medical expenses though mainly the pride bit) all while trying to figure out what to do about the attraction they’ve been feeling since the moment they first glimpsed each other at the market.
I do love stories like this one where the plot is more focused on developing these characters in a sort of calmer setting. There’s more focused on the romance but also still a slight outside conflict influencing their literal journey. Not sure if that makes sense to y’all, but summed up: I truly enjoyed reading this book!
* Badass plus-size FMC
* Cinnamon roll MMC
* Both MCs are bisexual
* Dual POV
* Metal mage elf
* Lavender-skinned half-giant
* Anxiety rep/body image issues
* Abandonment/intimacy issues
* Growing in magic/learning control
* plenty of delicious food/cooking
Thank you to the Forever team for a chance to read an early copy of this wonderfully cozy and fantastical romance.

First off thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for giving me the eARC version so quickly!!
From the very first few chapters—it’s clear this cozy fantasy doesn’t shy away from SPICEE! The spicy parts are so well described it’s hard not to fan yourself! I loved how quickly the spark ignites between Elikki, a fiery jewelry maker with unpredictable magic, and Barra, the gentle half-giant who’s convinced he’s the last person she’d ever attract. Their banter is laugh-out-loud funny, especially when a brush with the constables forces them together in tense and tantalizing ways. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Barra is utterly captivated by Elikki, but his own uncertainty holds him back. Meanwhile, Elikki—who’s more confident about her charms—can’t figure out why he hasn’t made a move. Both characters try to keep things casual, wary of deeper commitment after the rough relationships they’ve each experienced in the past.
Despite the friction, their simmering chemistry shines through each encounter. One moment, they’re clashing personalities and trading witty barbs; the next, we’re treated to some truly swoon-worthy—and very spicy—exchanges that caught me off guard in the best possible way. The narrative’s alternating perspectives only heighten the romance, letting us see how each character’s stubborn assumptions gradually melt into desire. Their push-and-pull is further intensified once they slip out of town—not only are they dodging constables, but there’s a bounty on their heads, too. If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced read that balances cozy inns and snappy dialogue with a healthy dose of spicy intimacy, A Tale of Mirth and Magic absolutely delivers. The blend of humor, heart, and heat is addictive, and the dynamic between Elikki and Barra is as steamy as it is sweet.
One personal caveat for me (which may not bother everyone) is that I’m not a huge fan of the characters’ bisexuality or the presence of same-sex parents throughout the book—though I realize this is entirely a matter of personal preference. I also didn’t love that they sometimes made Elikki sound like she was a “hoe” who slept around a lot, which felt like a missed opportunity for such an amazing character.
But even with these personal dislikes I loved the book so much I couldn't put it down and I finished it in one day, don’t be surprised if you find yourself flying through it—then wishing for a sequel just like I am!!!

Cozy Fantasy with just the right spice! If you are a fan of the Mead Mishaps series this book is right up your alley! I enjoyed reading about Elekki, an elf jeweler and Barra, a half giant bookkeeper and how they begin an inadvertent adventure together. These characters felt more flawed than the ones I typically see in cozy fantasy - and I mean this in a good way! Each of our main characters have their own shortcomings/insecurities that they become more aware of and work hard to adapt or move beyond what is holding them back. I loved the dual POV so that we could see deeper into what each character was going through and the reader can see what is impacting their relationship as a whole. I also really loved that each character works on themselves in the book - the relationship isn’t the automatic answer, there is introspection and character growth. Worldbuilding wise - adorable - and just the right balance of fantasy elements to appeal to those who don’t play in a DND campaign every week, while being interesting enough for fantasy lovers to enjoy. The side characters are wonderful - especially the traveling band they meet! All in all - I am hoping the author does another book in this world! I would definitely read more books from Kristin Vale! Huge thank you to NetGalley and Forever publishing for allowing me to read an early copy of this book! These thoughts and opinions are my own but thank you reader for reading them!

This book was SO FUN! Full of adventure, lots of spice, and a strong FMC. I loved Elikki so much. From the very beginning she was strong and fierce and not afraid to stick up for herself and her worth. She’s got a temper and I love it. Barra was so sweet and swoony and perfect! Their journey was so sexy, cozy, full of delicious food and adventure and running from bounty hunters! Loved it so much.

Premise:
This cosy fantasy follows two lonely individuals who unexpectedly cross paths after a run-in with the law forces them to flee together. As they embark on their journey, they not only discover more about each other but also grow individually, with their initial impressions giving way to a blossoming love. Through their shared experiences, they each learn to heal from past wounds while responding to the other's emotional needs.
Vibes/ Themes:
Feel good, cozy fantasy, character development, confident and fiery FMC, protective and shy MMC, found family, lonely souls finding love, multiple POV
Perfect for:
This book is perfect for readers who enjoy a fantasy adventure with a world that’s easy to jump into and understand. It’s a cozy tale filled with delightful, relatable characters. The FMC is a confident, self-assured girly (elfy?), though comfortable in her own skin, still occasionally needs a reminder of how much she has to offer—who can’t relate to a lil morning pep talk! The MMC is protective, doting and loving, but not overly possessive, offering a refreshing balance to the usual "will kill anyone who looks at you" trope. Add to that his love for tea and neat-freak tendencies, and he’s downright adorable. The romance feels natural, with spice that’s intentionally placed and a progression that feels realistic and relatable
Perfect for lovers of: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, The Spellshop.
What worked well: the plot (no spoilers) and characters!
The book maintains a good pace, balancing the unfolding adventure with the evolution of the FMC’s magic and the growing love between the characters. The story moves steadily, keeping you engaged without feeling rushed, allowing both the plot and relationships to develop naturally.
There are a few laugh-out-loud moments throughout the book, particularly during the traveling band scene. It’s a cute blend of humor and chaos!
The author’s ability to describe visuals is also wonderful, especially when it comes to the intricate details of jewelry, food, and character appearances. These descriptions bring the world to life, making everything feel vivid and easy to imagine.
This book features a delightful and lovable dynamic between a reserved, shy, neat-freak MMC and a joyful, free-spirited FMC. The author alternates POV throughout, exploring their complexities and emotional layers, making their journey together feel engaging. I don't tend to gravitate towards the multi-POV because at times it feels as the male voice is simply commenting on the FMC, but in A Tale of Mirth and Magic, the male POV helps to highlight his reactions, traumas and experiences that really lay out why he is a good match for the FMC.
Improvements
Okay weird thing, the term “mas” was thrown around a bit. I eventually understood it based on context but was confused at first.
Also would have loved to find out what happened between Telen and Maerryl!

Overall, the book was an enjoyable read. I’m in my cozy era, and I read it in 2-3 days! Definitely check it out once released!
Quick disclaimer, I am new to the world of book reviews. This review reflects my personal opinion and experience with the book. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Barra and Elikki are engaging main characters who occupy a well-realized fantasy world in which the only cares of the inhabitants are magic, earning a living, and having actual conversations and relationships without being impaired by technology addiction. It’s always so refreshing! I enjoyed the humor and cozy, spicy vibes throughout.
Both of them have emotional issues that are preventing them from being fully able to relate to each other and I find miscommunication frustrating at times. However, this is a romance so they do get their adorable HEA at the end! 4.5 stars rounded up.

Both Spicy with a capital “Ssss” and incredibly cozy fantasy. I loved both characters. Elikki is a total charisma queen with a tough past that really seems to get in the way of her finding happiness at times, and Barra is a calm king, with a loving family, relatively routine life, but still plenty of heartbreak. But there’s just something about Elikki that sets his world ablaze, and Barra is the calm, loving presence that may be enough of an anchor for Elikki to find her higher self.
The world building was great, with a lot of focus on cozy food, comfortable beds, pretty places, and plenty of magic. It was the best kind of palate cleanser and calming adventure. I really adored it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for an advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review!

The plot is highly entertaining, and the chemistry between the main characters is skillfully portrayed.

This was an adventurous story that was fun and entertaining. Elikki is definitely impulsive which often lands her into trouble but she has a kind heart. Barra is more thoughtful and thinks more thoroughly. They complement each other and add fun to their story.

This book started slow, it took about 10-15% of the book into it before I became attached to the characters. It did end in a feel good wholesome way.
I believe the slow start is brought on by the lack of overall plot. The book starts off with our main character just living her life when a random incident happens which causes her to run away with the MMC. At one point I felt like I knew more about the setting and the food that the FMC was eating than the actual main character herself. But even that runaway plot felt weak because the FMC didn’t really seem scared, when some bounty hunters can’t for her she didn’t even tell the MMC about them? Also, the author mentions this weird rune on one of the bounty hunters and alludes to darkness regarding that bounty hunter but…then…we never learn anything about it and that plot point just dies off.
Additionally, there could have been more growth for the female main character. She doesn’t know what she wants and has no clear goals. She starts off as a traveling nomad with no close connections and ends…as a traveling nomad with a connection to the MMC. We hear her talk about becoming a mage and harnessing her magic but the book never allows her to truly explore and fully master her own magic.
I really appreciated that the main character was curvy but it wasn’t pushed into your face. I am a mid-sized woman and typically avoid books with plus sized heroines because the authors act like being plus sized is a personality trait. This author wrote it beautifully. Sure, our female main character is curvy, yeah she had a soft belly, and the FMC/MMC love it.

REVIEW:
I thought this was a cute and cozy fantasy with the perfect amount of spice. I found it every easy to read as the world building was detailed yet straight forward. I felt well immersed in this land of giants and magical elves.
This cozy tale follows Elikki whom is a very independent elf that crafts artesian jewelry. She is very feisty yet emotional and has yet to truly conquer the ability to control her powers. She has sworn off relationships as she sees the world though a care-free lense and doesn't see the need for commitment.
Barra who is an eight foot tall, protective, lavender, half-giant that is just the sweetest Cinnamon Roll MMC. Barra is in a very vulnerable place giving that he previously had his heart broken. Working in his family-owned store, he just wants to be like everyone else. He yearns to be loved and valued.
Elikki and Barra meet when she has a disgruntled customer and Barra steps in to help but makes matters worse. To evade their bounty, they skip town and go on the run. During this journey Barra starts to develop feelings for Elikki even though he knows she is not interested in a commitment. The spice radar quickly goes up as they both let their guards down and learn to be present and indulge in the moment. These two were all over the place and I was here for every bit of it.
The character development was truly a delight to read, and I was rooting for them the whole way. This is a first that I have read from this author yet, I am excited to read more.
Thank you to Forever for inviting me to read this title in exchange for my honest review.

I recommend reading if you like cozy fantasy romance, he falls first, plus size romance, on the run, dual pov.

This is a fantastic fantasy read! I expected cozy and cute but this was so much more. I really hope this has duet style audio because I would eat that right up!!
