Aspiring novelist Anne, overworked and harried mother of 9-year-old twins Ben and Beatrice and devoted wife of Paul, has a gig ghostwriting The Well, the book of celebrity self-help guru Melody Wells. For all her ease manifesting abundance, Melody can’t seem to manifest her book.

When Melody points Anne and her husband in the direction of an apartment that would be perfect for their growing family, Anne is thrilled. But very soon, she learns that Melody’s intentions may not be as honest as she thought.

The tone of the story was mostly calm and unhurried. When Anne drives herself off to a particular location, we get a hint that the pace might be about to pick up, but that doesn't happen.

The author doesn’t mention a surname for Anne and Paul. The lack of a surname may be irrelevant to other readers, but it is a pet peeve of mine.

None of the characters were well developed. There was nothing nuanced about Anne or Melody.

Melody never exuded any kind of menace. Nor did the house for that matter, though it seemed that the author was trying to project it as some kind of haunted house. There was nothing creepy about it.

The new house projected no aura of danger. The kids didn’t feel a thing. They could all have lived there without sensing any danger.

I couldn’t see the point of the story. The blurb says weird things start to happen but that is not really true. All in all, their life seemed rather pleasant.

It was odd that the couple went looking for a new home, leaving their kids behind alone. No babysitter. Just two nine-year-olds by themselves for an extended period of time.

The only thing the book managed to do was to present the fakeness of the celebrity wellness culture.

What was the point of the mysterious locked closet? It was a Chekhov’s gun that wasn’t fired.

Anne bemoans that she is a chauffeur, nurse, teacher, cook and a plethora of roles rolled into one. Her tone indicated that she was one-of-a-kind, but ask any mother, those are the roles we all do.

There are far too many pop culture references. Modern Family, Matthew Perry, Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Mont Blanc, Squid Games, to name a few. Beyond a point, it seemed like a lot of name-dropping.

There is nothing scary about the big reveal.

The Sublet was a tense and twisty short story, full of suspense and mystery. I really enjoyed it.

Greer Hendricks is a very talented author. I've loved her previous books, co-authored with Sarah Pekkanen (The Wife Between Us, An Anonymous Girl, You Are Not Alone, and The Golden Couple) as well as her previous short story Show of Faith.
Her writing draws you in immediately, I couldn't put it down.

I look forward to reading more from her. Hopefully a full novel next time. 🤞

I highly recommend.

4 Stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to Netgalley, Amazon Original Stories, and Greer Hendricks for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

With twin children and a husband ghost writer Anne feels increasingly distant from, navigating life in their cramped apartment is an everyday struggle.

So, when she lands a promising assignment with a lifestyle guru who needs her writing skills, it's a bonus when the aforementioned employer also manages to give her the inside track on a beautiful apartment that has the potential to transform her family life.

Except things aren't quite that simple...

Because, are they ever?

Greer Hendricks delivers an unsettling story about a ghost writer who is struggling with the inspiration for her own book and trying to manage a domestic life where she feels out of her depth, only to find that she's in way over her head. This gets 3.5 stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this book "The Sublet" and all opinions expressed are my own. A short story, quick read. I just didn't get invested in the story at all. Having read other books by this author, of course I wanted to read this one. Overall didn't like it.

A wonderful and deeply creepy short story from Greer Hendricks, Anne is a tired mother of twins who is a ghostwriter. She lands a big client who offers her a bigger apartment as a sublet - it's an offer that seems to good to be true...

This was a very enjoyable read which casts a sly eye at the world of 'gurus' and the dark side of public personas. Immensely readable it will keep you turning the pages. Tension is built up nicely and character development is engaging.

Anne, a young mother of twins is working on writing her first novel, but in the meantime earns her money working as a ghostwriter. Living in a cramped Manhattan apartment she dreams of moving with her husband and children to a place where they can have more room to breathe. Her current client Melody Wells is a wellness guru who has hired her to write her next self help book. When Melody tells Anne about a bigger apartment available for sublet in a good area, Anne thinks it’s too good to be true and she might not be wrong.

This is a atmosheric short story that is rapidly heading into creepy territory, but then takes a sideways flip to end on a clever note. An interesting and entertaining idea that could have easily been a full length novel or novella.

This was a good, quick read. It is very short and can be read in one sitting. It was an evil little story, that had some surprises! I enjoy this author and this one did not disappoint.

Thank you @netgalley and @amazonpublishing for the advanced copy of The Sublet! I’m used to reading Greer as a coauthor duo but I found that I really enjoyed their solo venue! This was a super fast and predictable story but I loved every minute of it! I would have loved to read a longer and even more detailed version of this story! Definitely worth the quick read!

Summary- Anne is barely keeping it together. A frazzled ghostwriter and aspiring novelist, she juggles nine-year-old twins and a listless marriage from an overcrowded Manhattan apartment, spreading herself thinner each day. Just as Anne is about to give up on her dreams she lands her biggest client yet: Melody Wells.
Melody paints a picture of serenity and empowerment in the lavender haze of her visualization workshops—however, the one thing she can’t manifest are the pages her publisher is demanding for her new motivational book. Enter Anne.
As Melody invites Anne deeper into her magical world, Anne finds herself working impossibly long days and traveling far beyond her comfort zone.
When Melody passes along a lead on a spacious sublet complete with East river views, built-in closets and three bedrooms, Anne can’t believe her luck. Melody seems to know just what her family needs. But as small, unsettling incidents begin to accumulate, Anne starts to wonder what price she’s willing to pay for the good life.

This was a really nice and engaging short read that kept me engaged the whole time. Having read several of Greer Hendricks books, I was expecting a little more of a plot twist at the end but overall still liked it.

I always enjoy Greer Hendricks' books, and The Sublet was no exception. This short story was such a great palette cleanser after finishing a few longer books. It had just the right amount of suspense and intrigue to keep me hooked without feeling overwhelming. I loved how quickly it pulled me in and delivered a satisfying twist in such a short amount of time. It reminded me why I always look forward to anything Greer Hendricks writes!

Interesting short story that kept me engaged. The ending left me with unanswered questions, but overall, not a bad short story.

Anne is a ghost writer and is currently working on a motivational book for someone who went viral on TikTok and scored a book deal. She finds herself in a new apt and then notices a few weird things, causing her to dig a little deeper.

I must admit, I have not read short stories before but this just felt SO abrupt. There was not a lot of room for character development or much of a plot. I was hooked but unfortunately, for me, it didn’t deliver. There seemed to be a lot of background and build up and then the twist and ending were just rushed.

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy in exchanged for an honest review!

This short story was a nice, quick read! It definitely kept me wanting to read. I really thought there was going to be a big twist at the end and I was kind of disappointed when there wasn’t.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for the ARC. My opinions are my own.

This was an interesting little story, even if it was relatively easy to guess where the mysteries were leading.

Quickly summarized: Ghost writer moves to a cheap sublet with her family and tiny clues to a larger mystery turns up in her apartment and everyday to something more sinister going on.

I can't say too much without spoiling everything. Let's just say that it was a pretty clever setup of clues and dialogue leading to the resolution. It was slightly uncanny and felt very ... claustrophobic in a sense.

Cool little story. Didn't blow me away, but for the 40 ish pages it lasted it did entertain me greatly. If you have room for 40 pages of a mystery in your day, I do recommend this. If you generally don't like short stories for being "too short" and "uncooked" then this won't resolve those gripes for you.

Giving this 3 stars. Entertaining, nothing amazing.

Greer Hendricks never disappoints! The Sublet was a fast-paced short story that I devoured in one sitting. This is a gentle reminder that if something is too good to be true, it normally is.

I wish there was a little more to the story but it was still intriguing.
