This graphic novel follows Avery, a lonely girl in the middle of nowhere, living with her dad. One day she finds a lamp and while cleaning it releases Gribblet (a herald genie). She learns some secrets and goes on a grand adventure. This was so sweet and funny, with eye catching illustrations. I think that everyone would enjoy this wholesome tale.

This was cute! I am in love with Gribblet. What an adorable and spunky character! This is fast paced and has a good message about family and the lengths that we will go to in order to bring back the ones we love.

“This place could use a little magic, that’s all I’m sayin’.”
And magic she shall get.
Cool idea with cute art, mesmerizing fantasy world and nice, diverse character designs. Plus the funny ‘denglish’ (or so they sound like) words in the genie language!
I would’ve liked to have a bit more of the “magic card tricks” described in the blurb, as there are cards in the beginning, but not many card tricks. Still, her loneliness, living in the middle of nowhere, was shown quite well.
Characters: I loved the loving & caring dad, the pet-to-be Gribblet, the relatively relatable Vulgarin, the mysteriously majestic Arbiters, and, of course, magic-loving Avery. Her mom, Caressa, only fell a little flat and was a cliche damsel-in-distress character.
But overall it was fun, and I’m sure lots of kids in the target group will love this!
Looking forward to volume 2, I want to know more about Gribblet. I have my theories ...

The format of being a graphic novel makes the book easy to read and follow along with. The story contains a couple of twists and turns which make for an interesting read. Also i love the illustration style.

This is a great little middle-grade graphic novel. I really liked the art style, it fits the story perfectly and it's cute and impressive in equal measure. The story is inventive, adventurous and fast-paced, and there's an adorable little sidekick creature. Perfect for middle-graders!

Avery lives in the middle of nowhere and helps her dad run their family gas station. When one day she wishes that her life had a little more *magic* in it, everything changes. She discovers an old oil lamp in the storage and when she tries to light it she meets Gribblet, a cute fire creature who is herald (a being who assists genies by explaining rules to humans). Avery discovers a secret about herself that changes everything and she gets transported to the world of the genies where she goes on a journey to discover the truth about herself and her family.
What a beautiful graphic novel debut! The art is exciting with fun characters and detailed atmospheric panels. The coloring is vivid and exciting - perfect for an adventure story. Young readers will identify with a lot of the feelings Avery has throughout the story: loneliness, grief, and a desire for more excitement/ adventure. The pacing is quick making it a great choice for reluctant readers. This book will appeal to fans of The Girl & the Galdurian by Tim Probert and Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi. I would recommend this book for readers in grades 3 and up.

This is such a great book for kids! A young girl discovers a magic lantern and soon learns that her mother is not only a genie but is also still alive. Determined to find and save her, she embarks on an adventure with her new friend. Along the way, they face challenges and must find ways to overcome them. The art fits the story perfectly, drawing you in and making the journey even more immersive.

This is a charming story with beautiful art and loving characters! The art is so fun to look at, with bright colors that adhere to the story and add to the drama. The plot is easy to grasp and doesn't stray. I love how expressive the characters are, and it brings out the emotions so well. The story is adventurous and Avery is a wonderful main character to look at and see her journey! Avery's mom and dad are cuties and I adored Gilbert! I look forward to what the sequel will have in store for us as the ending for book 1 concluded very well!

This was a sweet quick story about a magic lamp and genies that ultimately led Avery (the MC) to go from bored and fed up to happy and surrounded by love.

This is an easy, fun and light hearted graphic novel. The art was stunning. The story is full of mystery and adventure. Had a really good time reading it while gazing at the art.

A cute graphic novel about a young girl, Avery, who discovers that her mom was a genie who fell in love with her father and then was forced back to the genie world. Because her parents had wished for a baby Avery has the ability to move between the human world and the world within the genie lamp. With her new friend, Gribblet, Avery sets off to find her mom and reunite her family. This book has a fun story and good artwork. It didn't blow my mind but I was entertained and enjoyed it. I'm not sure that I would read more if the series continues but liked it for what it is.

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. It is a quick read (even for the target audience) and the pacing is just right to keep younger readers hooked. It has some darker aspects, but nothing that would be too scary for any readers. I was especially drawn in by the illustrations - they draw you in as much as the actual story. Speaking of the story, it has a little bit of something for everyone...there is humor, adventure, mystery, a villain/bad guy, a little romance (between Avery's mom and dad), and fantasy/magic. Gribblet adds humor and turns out to make a pretty good guide/partner for Avery as she learns about the world of genies and her part in it. I am especially excited to know this is the first in a series and am looking forward to seeing what else Avery and Gribblet get up to. I would highly recommend this book for elementary classroom and school libraries!

Cute and wholesome fantasy adventure story. Fast paced with great art.
I loved Griblet as a character and am looking forward to the sequel!
I like that the ending felt satisfying even though it’s clear they have options for continuation.

This was really stinking cute! The art style was gorgeous, and there was just enough peril for you to feel that there are actual stakes, while keeping it appropriate for a middle grade audience. Avery is a great character, and Gribblet is adorable!
Themes of family, self-discovery, finding your place and fitting in.

A really good first instalment of what is going to be a great series. Our main character is a girl, not quite human not quite magic, she is a Wishborn. Going between the genie realm and the human realm she looks for her mother who has been kept in a cave for performing a wish that was forbidden. My favourite character has to be Gribblet, what I wouldn’t give to be on an Avery and Gribblet adventure! Such a sweet story with a lot of heart and the illustrations are stunning as well.
I wish we had a little bit more character development but I’m so excited to see what comes next.

The artwork is stunning and provides the overall picture and background. The story itself is simple and written for elementary level readers. Avery lives with her dad in a quiet area beside the gas station he runs. When she finds a dusty old lantern, she rubs it and a Herald pops out. She learns the truth about her past and sets off to rescue her mom. She discovers she can travel through the lamp as she is part genie. Some of the plot points feel disconnected but the overall story is a sweet one about family love.

This book for children was an amazing light hearted read and may have helped me out of my reading slump! Perfect for children wanting to learn English!

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. The premise was very fun. I liked the idea of a genie falling in love with a human. I really enjoyed getting to see the world. The magic is fun. The art was really great.

Avery lives with her Dad, miles from anywhere. She's lonely and has never known her mum, but when she finds an old lamp, she finds a chance to get her mum back!
A lovely story with wonderful illustrations. Lots of cool characters and amazing places.

Great middle grade story with relatable discussion points around missing people and wishing them there. I loved the comic illustrations, I really enjoyed this one! It’s also fab to find a middle grade graphic novel that isn’t wimpy kid or Dogman! Will recommend:)
