I wanted to like this book because I was so intrigued by the story. I found the characters and their vulnerability quite touching, but the manner of the storytelling really didn't appeal to me - I found it a bit disorienting and confusing, and at times really didn't know what was happening. Now that I've read a little about Emma Hooper and what she intended for the story, it sounds like that was her intention! So she did succeed. She's a fine writer, but this one wasn't for me, sadly. Rather hard to follow at times. Not sure if i enjoyed this book or not.

The somewhat sad ending was a bit of a surprise after the absolutely and utterly charming book. I loved Etta's voice, it was so hauntingly beautiful and so cute that the ending, the inevitable ending, lands like a well-aimed punch. Well done.
