When a Rake Falls by Sally Orr

As much as I wanted to love this, I didn't. The hot air balloon had me so excited because I love hot air balloons so much! And the fact that it's operated by a woman in this time period was even more exciting to me. The hero hires her to fly him to France to win a race, and off they go. Everything sounded like it was going to be amazing, but oh my goodness... The dialogue in this book is, for lack of a better word, ridiculous. Conversations between the heroine and the hero felt forced and awkward. I go for wit and banter, and this was painful. Boyce is very kind and sweet, but so strange. His constant spontaneous singing had me rolling my eyes. Eve is unremarkable and flat. I had such high hopes for such a unique and interesting plot, and it all completely fell apart for me.

When a Rake Falls is the first book by Sally Orr I have read. I must say that I wasn't all that impressed. I liked Boyce and Eve but this story was lacking continuity. There were times where it was really hard to follow what was happening and it got confusing. There is a lot of scientific talk in the middle of the story that in my opinion takes away from the story. I'm all for science and talking about science but it didn't help this book out. I love that Eve is a female scientist and that Boyce helped her with her experiments. However, I think there was too much detail focused on those and not enough elsewhere. I got really bored halfway through and probably should have just given up but I don't like not finishing a book.
