I had the pleasure of reading The Hitchhikers before release day. I was hooked before I hit 30 pages. I loved the dual narration, especially since it was written in 3rd person. The way Chevy Stevens wrote this book was brilliant. We see how Simon and Jenny evolved; we see the love they share. There is suspense, there is room for the reader to have their own opinions and thoughts. During the period while they were driving in the car, I never felt bored or as if the plot was stagnant. This book is very well-written, and I will be purchasing a physical copy.

There was only two parts that I felt could've had improvement or that I didn't like. Number one: at about 32% , there was a paragraph that mixed up the names of the two women. This is what is written, "In the morning, she and Simon took turns in the bathroom, then Jenny changed into a lavender sundress that had puffed sleeves and floated loose around her belly. Most of her clothes needed to be washed now. She and Simon had run away in such a hurry she'd barely had time to grab anything. She needed a shower. Alice probably wanted one, too." This segment was written in Jenny's point of view, but it's written as if it was Alice.
Secondly, we never find out what happens with Ruth and William. Did they survive? How did they get out? How did Tom escape? I know some authors like to leave this up to the imagination of the reader, but I tend to wish I knew how things played out.

In the end, I rated this book 4/5 stars.

Alice and Tom are at the start of an RV adventure through Canada, trying to heal their hearts after a devastating loss. Their paths cross with two hitchhikers. What follows is a thrilling, suspenseful story with lots of twists and turns. Chevy Steven’s hit it out of the park with this thriller! Really enjoyed this one! Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s press for the opportunity to read this great ARC by one of my favorite authors.

Thanks to St. Martin's press and Netgalley for this riveting eARC.

A combination of a modern in Cold Blood with touches of Bonnie and Clyde, The Hitchhikers chronicles the story of a forced abduction.

Tom and Alice, a caring couple unknowingly admit evil into their lives while trying to help a seemingly innocent young couple.

This violent road trip rapidly spirals into a hellacious fight for their lives as Tom is beaten half to death and the violent young man forces Alice, someone who has always colored between the lines, to become actively involved in his brutally criminal behavior. If Alice refuses to participate, her husband Tom, already suffering with broken bones after a viscous attack, will pay the ultimate price for her refusal.

The most terrifying part of this story it's realism, it could literally happen to any well-intentioned person.

Along the way, despite physical wounds opening, Alice and Tom are able to grow closer despite (or perhaps because of) this insanity, and they are able to begin to heal their fractured relationship.

A 5 star hellacious crime filled thrill ride of a novel, this book will have both mystery and psychological drama fans cheering, and eagerly waiting for the next book from Chevy Stevens; I loved it!❤️🌹

I really enjoyed this book! It grabbed me right from the start and I couldn't put it down. Alice was a great protaganist and I was rooting for her and Tom to make it and survive Simon's crime spree. Although he did deplorable things throughout the book and Jenny did nothing to stop him, Stevens writes these characters in such a way that I found myself empathizing with them. Especially as we learn the extent of Jenny's backstory and how she got here. I've loved the other Chevy Stevens books I've read and The Hitchhikers is no exception.

This book was intense! A road trip meant to heal a broken marriage turns into a full blown nightmare. Tom and Alice pick up two seemingly harmless hitchhikers. Don’t to this at home folks! The Hitchhikers is packed with tension, twists, and a creeping sense of dread. It’s part psychological thriller and part survival story. Every chapter pulls you deeper into the chaos, making you question who’s really in control. I enjoyed this high stakes, eerie thriller!

I’ve read all of Chevy Stevens’ books and this one does not disappoint. Tom and Alice are a young married couple and set out for a summer long road trip through Canada in their brand new RV. In the beginning of their trip, they spot a young teenage couple and ask them to joint them at dinner at their campsite. This teenage couple have a dangerous secret which ends up turning Tom and Alice’s roadtrip into a disaster.

4 stars-Married couple Tom and Alice just lost their baby and learned that another pregnancy may kill Alice. They leave Seattle on their summer break to go to the 1976 Olympics, making it a road trip across Canada. (I just want to throw a nod to the details of the camper, shag floors, green floral bench seats, and dishes from the Montgomery Ward catalog…I think I grew up in the wrong era.) At one of their campsites, Alice meets Jenny who is nursing a blister in the bathroom. She invites her back to her camper for bandaids, and soon Jenny and her boyfriend join Alice and Tom on their travels.

We quickly learn that Jenny and her bf are wanted for the murder of Jenny’s mom and stepfather. Once Alice sees the story in the paper, they become unwilling accomplices on a brutal reign of terror.

There is a bit of strange connection between Jenny and Alice. Jenny is pregnant and about 10 years younger. There is a sense the she sees Alice as the mom she always wanted, but Jenny also struggles with pleasing her boyfriend, the only one who has ever really cared for or taken care of her. I really enjoyed the story and found myself on the edge of my seat a number of times. The ending was fitting, however there is one small part that didn’t work for me…

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc. I have read all of read Chevy Steven’s books . After finishing this one I think I am going to go back and re-read a few of them.

I absolutely LOVED the latest novel by Chevy Stevens. It had me hooked from the very first page and I couldn't tear myself away until I'd finished.

The book is set in 1976 where married couple Alice and Tom set out on an RV adventure in Canada. What begins as a serene and scenic getaway quickly morphs into a nightmare when they cross paths with Ocean and Blue. This seemingly carefree, hippie couple initially appear harmless and in need of a helping hand. However, the truth unfolds including their real identities, Jenny and Simon. They are fugitives on the run, and Alice and Tom find themselves unwillingly held captive and forced to tag along into their dangerous escape from the authorities.

From the start, it got my heart rate pumping with the fast paced narrative. I was on the edge of my seat as they travelled around from town to town on the run. While the ending was somewhat predictable for me, it did not cause me to lose any interest. I was fully invested in the story, devouring each word to uncover what came next.

The book had all the emotions and the ending had me sobbing. It’s a truly remarkable read. Take note, the story is quite graphic and violent. Check your trigger warnings before diving in.

Tom and Alice are enjoying a road trip to the Olympics in 1976 when they make the decision to pick up a pair of young hitchhikers named Ocean and Blue. At first, they believe them to be carefree hippie types, but it soon turns out they are more dangerous than they first appeared. But by the time they discover this, they have already traveled together hundreds of miles and formed a tentative connection with the couple, especially the girl, who looks up to Tom and Alice as parental figures. But once their secret is out, Tom and Alice have to plan an escape while convincing Ocean and Blue they are doing no such thing. Will they succeed, or will they become their next victims?

The setting of the book is great, total 1970s nostalgia! The descriptions of the clothes and the appearances of people really make you feel like you’re back in time. And with no current technology for the characters to use for help, you get a sense of how trapped they really are. Long stretches of desolate highway, where anyone can disappear in a second. You know the story can’t possibly end well for everyone, so there’s the suspense of who will be the last ones standing. Spending so much time together causes the characters to bond in unexpected ways, and it’s bittersweet because you know it can’t last.

The book does drag a bit in spots, which is expected and perhaps intentional, reflecting the long stretches of time on the open road. There were random characters like the church members who just seemed like fillers to add more action to the story. But it’s a fun read that should keep you engaged, and dare I say it’d be perfect for a road trip!

*Breaking News*
An American couple traveling through Canada were held hostage by a teen couple who robbed them, kidnapped them and forced the woman to help them rob stores…

This book was so good. It was heart pounding! The entire time I was on pins and needles waiting to see which way it would go. Ultimately, there is no good outcome when a situation like this is happening.

Tom and Alice decide to set out on a road trip in their new motorhome. They have a good marriage but you can tell right away something is amiss. They stop at a campground and come across two teenagers who act a bit different, but need a little help. Alice is a caregiver by nature and Tom is a teacher so they offer for them to come to their camper for a bandaid for Ocean’s foot. A friendship begins of which that only happens when you meet friendly strangers at campsites. Alice offers for them to stay for dinner, then offers them a tent, pillows, breakfast…
But it goes south quick.

The characters were real. I felt like Alice and Tom were my neighbors. Well written, engaging and I was cheering so loud for them the entire book.

Ocean and Blue were haunting characters. They didn’t have a great life as kids. Not excusable at all for behavior, but I learned their backgrounds and did have maybe a slight drop of compassion for them.

Loved the setting; the 70’s. There were little comments in the book of prices of things, clothes, etc that brought me into that time.

Told from two women’s point of view; Alice and Ocean, this book will stick with me forever.

As I read this, I felt like a movie was playing in my head. It has been a minute since Chevy Stevens last book and she is one of my favorite authors. I was ecstatic to get an early copy of this one.

If you are looking for a very fast paced, thrilling ride, highly recommend The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens.

The number of incomplete sentences in the beginning of the book was distracting. Proofreading is in order.

The characters seem to veer between emotions at an unrealistic pace and yet I didn't feel they were being adequately developed.. I found myself interested in where the plot would go but uninterested in the characters as presented.

I raced through this one as it gripped me by the throat! Tom and Alice are traveling through Canada in their RV when they stop and pick up hitchhikers, Ocean and Blue--otherwise known as Simon and Jenny. Things seem to be going well until Alice sees a newspaper article that has her worried as the couple in it look a lot like their hitchhikers....So buckle up and get reading!!!!

(2.5 rounded down) This is a thriller about a couple in their 30’s who help a pair of hitchhikers they meet at a campsite. The hitchhikers are not who they say they are and things go off the rails. The premise to this sounded fun and also reminded me of a great early Nicole Kidman movie I love (Dead Calm), but I was disappointed by this. I felt like the twists were telegraphed, the characters were pretty boilerplate, the dialogue felt forced, and the choices the characters make were not really realistic. I’m also a little tired of narratives including a violent upbringing as part of a character’s motivations, but that’s my own oversaturation, not a fault of the book. I did like the fact that the story is dual narrative, told by the wife of the couple and the girlfriend of the hitchhiking duo and the setting of the mid 1970’s - it was very atmospheric and also made plot sense, which I can’t elaborate on without spoilers. I preferred the front half to the back half and I do think this book will have an appreciative audience - that just wasn’t me!

Chevy Stevens is one of my favorite authors and once again, she has hit it out of the ball park with her riveting new book The Hitchhikers. I devoured it in one day, turning pages as fast as I could, long into the early morning hours. I was lucky to receive an ARC and I can’t wait for everyone else to read it!!

This one was a mixed bag for me. It's a solid story with an interesting cast of characters that were engaging. The suspense falters a little in the middle. I found myself putting it down easily and not feeling all that compelled to pick it up again. I was interested in how things would end up and wasn't really all that surprised by an ending that seemed a bit too neat and tidy.. Still, it was a solid read, just not a fantastic one.

I am a big fan of Chevy Stevens so it really pains me to say that this book just didn't quite hit the mark for me. Something about Alice was unlikeable. I can't pinpoint it exactly but I struggled with her character. Tom seemed to be kind of an afterthought and easily forgettable. Simon had really no backstory other than a drunk dad. The ending was a bit anticlimatic and I saw it coming. It's worth a read but won't be going onto my "absolutely recommend" list like some of the other books by the same author.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Net Galley and St. Martin Press for the E Arc of this book. I love every book I have read by Chevy Stevens and this one didn't disappoint.
