Jennifer Beckstrand brings the comic duo of Anna and Felty Helmuth to life, as they set about marrying off their grandchildren (who are taking WAY too long on their own.)
Ben Helmuth broke his engagement to Emma then moved to Florida so he wouldn't have to see the pain he caused her. He knows he can't ever marry anyone, but he has loved Anna since childhood and wants her to find happiness - even if it's with someone else.
Try as she might, Emma Nelson can't get over losing Ben. Her family is sick and tired of seeing her fountain of tears, and she has long ago run out of places to hide so she can cry in peace. She's tried dating other guys, going to every social event, and just about everything else her family expects of her, but nothing has mended her heart. When Ben returns to help Felty run the farm, how can she stay away when Anna has also asked for her help?
Good grief! Anna and Felty are a menace! Or rather, Anna is. She's willing to put Felty into a doctor's care - sure, it's for fairly minor surgeries, but it's surgery nonetheless - in order to get her grandson to stay. I couldn't believe Felty didn't refuse to stay down, or refuse any of the things she insisted he do for this cause. Yes, Ben and Emma love each other, and both of them are miserable without the other, but Ben has good reason - or thinks he does - to cut Emma loose.
Hilarity ensues as the accident-prone Emma stumbles through nearly everything she does, as both her twin brother, Mahlon, and Ben try to protect her from herself, and as Anna and Felty meddle to keep Ben from leaving. Will Emma ever discover that she's stronger than she thinks? Will Ben discover that love is one of God's gifts that he really shouldn't try to throw away?
I listened to this one from my local library, and it was a fairly quick "read". My only criticism is that the narrator mis-pronounced Mahlon every time. It should be M a - lon (long a) NOT Mah - lon (ah sound). Instead of researching the pronunciation a bit, she pronounced it like it looks. Otherwise, it was well done.
