Birnbaum's book is a revelation, offering a fascinating portrayal of a woman who was at the heart of crucial historical events. I absolutely loved learning about a woman whose life was so rich, so connected, and so daring.
A captivating biography of a woman, a princess, and a warrior who was extraordinary in so many ways. It's fascinating that she could exist in the way she did — her life was as much tortuous as it was free. As a resident of Japan for almost 10 years, it was a surprise to discover her when this book was published. Whether she is an unsung hero or a loathsome character, Birnbaum leaves the judging to the reader. Her detailed accounts and interviews with those who knew her both praise and condemn Kawashima, which only makes her more interesting. Props to Birnbaum for excellent research and converting what could be simply a series of tedious historical facts into a spellbinding biography that I still a couple of years later often ponder over.
