Well, let's start by saying I disagree with the publishers here. I disagree that this is a picture book for kids, as the vocabulary and mood of the piece are more in tune with adult books. I disagree this is about what it says it is, too – the piece is a mere slip of an origin story, as zoo-living big cats all have a fantasy dream about a different godlike cat, and then gain some superpowers, the end. Luckily they don't state this is self-contained, as I'd have to quibble with them there too – this does kind of depend on you knowing the other two in the series. Either way, this really feels like a beginning, and not something to close a trilogy. So while an oddity it's a pretty oddity, with a richness to the art and a real classy quality. It could bring some magic to the reading of a big cat lover, but only some, and nothing more – I can't see this warranting a re-read, and it's the art that makes this three and a half stars. As a self-contained read it's actually much less than that.
