ALC Review: Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case
Pub date: March 25, 2025
Narrator: Marisa Calin

I read this without reading the first book in the series and think that it worked fine as a standalone. It's a very non-serious historical mystery and romance - the humor was certainly on point and the tone is pretty light.

I thought the relationship between Alexander and Georgina was very cute and sweet! I liked both as characters and loved seeing the physical disability representation (Alexander has a club foot and his parents have never really accepted his 'imperfection').

I'll be honest, towards the end I got relatively lost in terms of the plot - a lot happened and I'm not sure if it was because I wasn't paying attention or if it was just hard to follow generally. It didn't really affect my enjoyment of the book per say, but I truly could not tell you how the plot resolves.

I thought the narrator did a good job.

Thank you to Hachette Audio for the ALC. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was part way through listening to Our Dear Miss H when I realized that the parrot and monkey were familiar and realized I’d met them in a previous book. A previous book I didn’t love.

But I like to give authors a second chance so I continued. And I’m glad I did. Our Dear Miss H is still pretty ridiculous, full of irreverent humor and unbelievable occurrences. But when you have an adorable rooster named Fluffus Legatus, you can’t help but be charmed.

The romance between Georgina and Alexander is sweet and adorable, and it was clear how smitten they both were. Overall, this was a fun and light historical filled with action, humor, and just enough romance to tie it all together.

This book just didn’t work for me. I like the characters, but there’s no sense of cause-and-effect in the plot. Every time the scene changes, it’s like reading a different book. DNF. I enjoyed the audiobook narration.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.

First of all, know going in this is the second book in a series (I was not aware of this when I read it). If you are a fan of Enola Holmes (and not just for Henry Cavill), a fan of Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, or the Jane Austen Murder Mystery series you are in for a treat. Georgiana Harrington is a lover of history and archeology, she must write under the pseudonym George Harrington, and she is considered a spinster. Her brother is trying to arrange an advantageous marriage, she is uninterested. Well, until she meets an intriguing man who listens. Will she finally think of marriage because of this man or will she still be independent?

Our Dear Miss H. Is On the Case is the second book in a series of regency romance/mysteries by Violet Marsh. I received an advanced listeners copy of the story from NetGalley and Hachette Audio | Forever.
The book is advertised as being perfect for fans Enola Holmes and Bridgerton. I would have to agree. Georgina Harrington is an intelligent and quirky woman who is ahead of her time. The mystery of Georgina’s missing cousin, her unusual animal friends, and frequent slapstick comedy make this a light and fun listen. Don’t forget about that Bridgerton reference though. You might begin listening to the story and think your kids might enjoy the characters, but be warned there are some steamy moments so not a family road trip listen.
The narrator Marisa Calin did a great job bringing the listener into the time period with her accent and ability to distinguish each character through voice acting. Overall, I would rate the story a 3.5 rounded up to 4. The story and romance are cute and I have to admit that I loved the chicken, but sometimes I forgot that the characters were looking for Piercival because there were so many other things going on.
The epilogue ended with the beginning of another mystery, so it looks like we should be on the lookout for a third in the series.
Thank you NetGalley and Hachette Audio | Forever for allowing me to listen to this ALC in exchange for my honest review.

I received a copy of this audiobook from netGalley for a honest review.

I really enjoyed this humorous, lighthearted yet seriously mysterious historical romance. I'm already looking for the first one to catch up on Charlette's story and I'm looking forward to the next one- that's going to be an interesting romance! I was swept away by this story to England and it's storied past and all the outrageousness that could come from it. If you like Bridgerton you'll love this one.

This was a fun feminist, historical romance that has a Duke and a woman antiquities lover pairing up to track down a missing person and some stolen artefacts while falling in love along the way. There was swoony moments, lots of action and some great spice too. I especially liked that the Duke had a disabled leg and used a cane. Great on audio and perfect for fans of books like Earl's trip by Jenny Holiday or authors like Evie Dunmore and Elizabeth Everett. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

I really wanted to love this book, *Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case* by Violet Marsh, narrated by Marisa Calin. However, while listening to the audiobook, I found myself getting distracted and struggling to connect with the narrator's style. I didn't feel attached to the characters and wasn't eager to learn more about them. Although the narrator did a fantastic job, the book—a historical romantic comedy with a dash of intrigue and adventure—just wasn't for me.

This is a light and funny book with a charming character list and a cute plot. This is a sequel but can be a standalone novel.

Thank you Forever / Hachette Audio for my ALC!

This book was so fun! What a perfect blend of romance, historical, wit, and a sprinkle (or maybe more) of animal companions.

This was described as Enola Holmes meets Bridgerton and I whole heartedly agree! It had some tension and mystery like Enola with the historical component and jokes of Bridgerton.

The book follows Georgina who has a penchant for education and scholars. Much to Georgina’s horror, her brother tries to marry her off to a man she does not know. During her small adventure’s Georgina meets Alexander who is not who she thought he would be.

Georgina’s such a fun character. I love that she’s smart and witty which for her time was inconceivable! I think both FMC and MMC are adorable and they suit each other so well. Definitely a fun and cozy read! 💗

The narrator did a wonderful job on this! I felt like I was in an quirky episode of a TV show 🙂‍↕️

Tropes/themes
- historical romance
- arranged marriage
- fun animal side kicks!
- mystery/detective case

Georgina Harrington should never have trusted her feckless cousin Percy with her most precious archaeological discovery. But no one would take her academic work seriously if they knew it was hers and not her male cousin’s. When Percy goes missing, only Georgina realizes that he is truly in danger. And to find him, she must rely on the help of his infuriating but incredibly attractive best friend. Although Alexander Lovett is always up for an adventure, he vows to keep his distance from Georgina, who is on his insufferable parents’ list of suitable brides for a future duke. But he’s surprised to find himself falling for Georgina’s surprisingly bold initiative and independent thinking that save them from more than one deadly scrape.
The first book I’ve read by the author & it won’t be the last. I also requested the audiobook so half read & half listened to the book. I enjoyed the book, the characters were well portrayed & had depth. I liked both Alexander & Georgina & there was chemistry between them. There was a parrot & a monkey who lightened the book but just enough for it not to dissolve into farce. I really enjoyed the audiobook, the narrator was accomplished & her use of voices raised my enjoyment
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

This book wasn’t fully what I was expecting, in that it surpassed every expectation I had for it.

The dialogue was amazing, the plot was interesting, and I loved all of our main characters. Plus, there were 4 animals full of hijinx. Who could ask for more?!

Got a little spicy at times, but short and not over the top if you aren’t into that. Things are described vaguely. Definitely not super slow of a burn though, while still managing to feel like one on the greater arc of the book.

This book is great for anyone looking for excellent dialogue and quick resolution on interpersonal miscommunication, which was amazing!

Thank you for this ARC! I really enjoyed it.

This book is an absolute DELIGHT.

It's adorable, it's fun, it's cozy. It's a campy mysterious historical romance that just keeps you laughing and swooning throughout the entire book. Did I mention that it has the cutest animal companions? No? Well IT DOES. The lighthearted whimsical low stakes feel is honestly just perfect.

Georgiana and Alexander are both very sweet and well written. Seeing Georgiana overcome the setbacks that women faced in this era was inspiring (even through the humorous aspects of the book). The disability rep from Alexander is well done and I appreciate how it's portrayed within the novel. I love all of The Black Sheep and thought the pranks were hilarious.

Sometimes I do think that the pace struggled a bit - but it wasn't too bad overall. The writing found a great balance between emotion and humor, the author was able to make me laugh at the appropriate times but also was able to make me swoon and feel for the characters as well.

I listened to the audiobook and the production quality was superb, the narrator does a great job differentiating characters and using accents/tones to create a dynamic environment for the story.

Our Dear Miss H is described as a cross between Bridgerton and Enola Holmes and it lives up to that comparison. I can't wait to see what else the author writes in this universe. The joy I felt while listening was fantastic and I can't wait to go back.

A cozy romance mystery filled with adventure and finding a missing cousin. The romance alone between Georgina and Alexander was swoon worthy and adorable.

The audio version of 'Our Dear Miss H is on the Case' was an absolute delight. The narrator's soothing voice and expressive delivery truly brought the story to life, making it a perfect cozy listen. I adored Miss H, a strong and bookish heroine, and her blossoming romance was both sweet and a touch spicy. The found family cast was charming, and the abundance of adorable pets, including chickens, added to the warmth. There were moments that made me laugh out loud, and others that brought tears to my eyes with their sweetness. This historical mystery, filled with social commentary and gentle humor, was a fantastic palette cleanser. I'm eagerly anticipating the sequel! 5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever for the ARC all ideas are my own.

A missing cousin, a reluctant duke-to-be, and a fiercely intelligent heroine who refuses to sit back and let the men bungle everything…what could possibly go wrong? Georgina Harrington has spent her life fighting to be taken seriously, so when her cousin Percy vanishes with her greatest archaeological discovery, she knows she’s the only one who can find him. Unfortunately, the only person willing to help is Alexander Lovett, Percy’s best friend, notorious rake, and the man determined to avoid marriage, especially to someone as maddeningly brilliant as Georgina.

The mystery-solving was a little disjointed, and I wasn’t always sure how we got from one clue to the next, but the ride was entertaining nonetheless. The romance had plenty of spark and tension, adding to the fun without overshadowing the adventure. And the grand villain reveal in the throne room? Absolute perfection. Then there’s the side effect of their escapades creating a chicken pet obsession. The sheer absurdity of it all made for the perfect comedic relief sprinkled throughout.

The audiobook narration was fantastic, smooth, engaging, and easy to follow. Character voices were distinct without feeling over-the-top, making it a breeze to stay immersed in the story.

Verdict: A charming mix of mystery, mayhem, and just the right amount of mischief.

ARC review
Publication date March 25th.
"Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case" by Violet Marsh is a witty historical rom-com.

I received an advance listener copy from Hachette Audio via Netgalley.
Opinions from this review are completely my own. I did not know that this is the second book in a series and I would say it can be read as a standalone without any issues.

The main characters are Georgina Harrington, an archaeologist and historian that needs to publish under her cousin’s Percy name and Alexander Lovett, one of Percy’s friends, that her brother tries to marry her to. They end up working together to find Percy and go through many adventures.

I enjoyed listening to the audiobook narrated by Marisa Calin. Even if she did a good job narrating both POVs, it would have been nice to have another narrator for Alexander’s chapters.

The story is a mix of between mystery and romance, with a lot of humor.
If you like strong female characters and cute romance with some spice in a historical setting, this book is for you.

The book didn't work for me, so I DNF'd at 30%. I felt the prose was too heavy-handed in its gestures to the unfolding romance. The musings and conclusions the POV characters drew came across both forced and too obvious, if that makes any sense. Overall, the book tells a story as opposed to showing how it naturally unfolds.
And then... the narrator. I liked her voice, very much in fact, but the way she elongates and breathes out the last word in most sentences and kind of tampers off drove me up the wall. I don't know whether those were directions she was given to imbue the narration with an audible air of mystery or something or her customary delivery. Either way, not pleasant.
