Filled with heartbreaking suspense.
Many thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a hard book to read. But you still can't pull away once you have started. The reality of this happening in our world is sad. But this book seems to give you a little inside of what you would hope never happens much less to your own family or someone you know.
Paige Dearth can tell a story like no other. Because of her life experiences she puts all her feelings into her characters and as the reader you can feel those feelings.
One Among Us is a story about Maggie, an eleven year old girl who is abducted from the local mall and sold into a human sex trafficking ring. Along her horrific journey she meets other children from 4 to 18 years of age being forced to do unspeakable things children should NEVER have to endure.
If you are faint of heart this book is not for you. Paige tells a story of what is happening in our society everyday and most of us have no idea it's going on. I live in a somewhat small town and I see this on our news nightly. It's happening and we need to open our eyes and realize as parents that we need to parent our children and do our best to keep them safe.
I have so much respect for Ms. Dearth for tackling the subjects she has in her books Believe Like a Child, When Smiles Fade and One Among Us. I will be reading her next books Born Mobster and Mean Little People. Kudos to you Paige Dearth for being brave and writing about the reality we live in.
