I absolutely loved this book when IO first read it. The world-building was fantastic and I fell in love with the characters. Sabaa Tahir takes an empire vs resistance story and makes it so much more by making her characters have incredible depth and well amazing the characters are not perfect, they are flawed acting with their hearts. Beautifully written.
From just these few chapters I’m so excited, this book so far is action packed, thrilling and captivating, you totally connect with the main character laia. while I can’t speak for the rest of the book I’m seriously hoping it continues to stay as thrilling as these few chapters.
This excerpt made me want to devour the book as soon as possible! And that’s what I did. I asked every Filipino blogger I knew if they had an ARC of An Ember in the Ashes that I could borrow just so I could read it as soon as possible.
Laia's story was the weaker of the two, though she did have the stronger character development and arc. While my complaints about her being chosen as a spy are addressed, the reasons are flimsy and don't stand up to scrutiny.
An Ember in the ashes. I have been WAITING to read this book and now I finally have and I loved it so much. Loved the writing, the characters. So many feels. My favourite scene omg Laia and Elias.. Yup, if you read it you know what I'm talking about! But don't you just hate it when there's so much tension between characters and hardly anything happens. I felt like I was on a see-saw with this love triangle. She just kept going back and forth, although I didn't hate Keenan's character I didn't really want him for her and I was so confused about who she liked, and really disappointed because she 'emotionally' feels for Keenan and 'physically' feels for Elias... Oh okay. I want her to feel everything for Elias. ? Come on. Next book, fingers crossed!
I totally find Cain really creepy but oddly likable. I sympathize with him. It makes me shiver when I think about all the things the commandant has done and how easily she has. That whole goodbye and revelation between Helene and Elias had me. I worry that she'll turn but I hope she doesn't.
Sequel. Sequel. :D
If you're looking for a fantastic story full of action and adventure, 'An Ember in the Ashes' is a great place to start. There was never a dull moment in this book. Some sort of danger was always brewing and I never knew what was going to happen next.
