Dr. Sharroky Hollie presented at our school district as a Keynote speaker and seeing that he was the author of this book, I was intrigued to read it. I am not a certificated teacher but I do work in a school library at a high school and have worked in education for over seven years.
This book has a lot of helpful information for anyone working with students. It does a great job of explaining cultural behaviors and scenarios in which educators might witness those behaviors as well as strategies for how to respond. Dr. Hollie also offers a lot of opportunities throughout the book for introspection, reflection, and examining personal biases. I appreciate the “Consider the Research” sections which give sources for additional learning as well as the provided links throughout to internet tools so educators can delve deeper into the subjects. There are tons of great lessons, protocols, and activities for culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning.
