Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Eddie Flynn series is an all time great series and this installment is no different. So twisty it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I really appreciate the real life themes of the book the things that are going on around us and the people effected by them. Steve Cavanagh has a way of telling stories that make you not want to put the book down and leaves you waiting for the next book. This is a must read for thriller fans.

When I got approved for The Devil’s Advocate, I was so excited that I posted about it in a few book groups—only to be told that the book has actually been out for years. Not sure why it’s still being distributed as an ARC, but honestly, I’ll take any excuse to read Steve Cavanagh’s work.

Right away, the premise hooked me. A corrupt district attorney who abuses his power to send innocent people to death row? A small town where the law is being twisted to serve a psychopath? It’s a terrifyingly real concept, and Cavanagh executes it brilliantly. The book also doesn’t shy away from heavier themes like systemic racism, white supremacy, and gun culture, all of which are woven seamlessly into the plot without feeling forced.

I love a legal thriller that doesn’t get bogged down in dry courtroom procedures, and this one is packed with action. Just when I thought I had a handle on what was happening, another twist would throw me completely off. The pacing is sharp, the stakes are high, and the way everything unfolds is so satisfying.

Eddie Flynn is easily one of my favorite protagonists—smart, quick-witted, and genuinely likable—but Berlin absolutely stole the show for me in this one. And that ending? Perfection.

If you’re into fast-paced legal thrillers with strong characters and plenty of twists, this is an easy recommendation. Fans of John Grisham’s The Guardians or Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent will eat this up.

The Devil’s Advocate by Steve Cavanagh is truly a masterpiece. Just when I thought there was no hope for Eddie Flynn, another twist would be right around the corner. Though the beginning had a little bit of a slow start and I though the beginning chapter had no relevance, Cavanagh has a way to tie everything together. The last 100 pages was explosive in how everything came together. I can’t wait for more!

I would read the back of a cereal box if Steve Cavanagh wrote it! I love the Eddie Flynn series and his stand alone novels!

I love this author's writing style. However this setting and plot line seemed pretty heavy handed at times. Listen, no one is more anti-MAGA than I am, and frankly I applaud the book drawing attention to racism, injustices and the flaws in the justice system. It reads with a lot of social commentary. It's commentary that I whole heartedly agree with, but some of your reads are probably going to feel very defensive and very attacked (as they should).

I have read all of the previous books in this series, and been a big fan up to this point. So I was excited to receive the ARC for this book. While the characters are still engaging, it is quite obvious that the author has very limited experience on the American South. His depiction of the peoples beliefs, morals and ideology is extremely one dimensional. It feels as if Mr Cavanagh got all of his information about the region, it's people and its history from a MSNBC panel. I expected better. Maybe next time.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝.

A legal thriller with a vile prosecutor who has an exponentially high number of Death Row convictions? Yes, please!

Something is rotten in the town of Bucktown, Alabama. Skylar Edwards, a young college student, is finishing the closing shift at the bar where she works. Her co-worker Andy Dubois, a young Black man, leaves with her. When Skylar is found brutally murdered, it stands to reason that the last person to see her alive, Andy, would be arrested. One problem--Andy is clearly innocent, and no one, including the judge, seems to care.

When New York lawyer Eddie Flynn catches wind of the corruption, he travels to the South intent on not just setting Andy free, but exposing every single corrupt person in this town. Unfortunately, Eddie has no idea just how rotten this town is and how far the racism goes. As someone who has lived in the deep South all my life, Steve Cavanagh was spot on with his portrayal of small-town Southern towns, even in this day and age. No, not every place is like this, but change seems to move slower down here. The author's notes were absolutely soul-crushing, and it taught me some things I wasn't aware of--like the dark truth behind The Freedom Riders.

Thank you to Atria Books for this early copy. This title is set to publish August 5, 2025.

Steve Cavanagh delivers an edge-of-your-seat legal thriller with The Devil’s Advocate, a gripping and thought-provoking novel that tackles difficult subject matters with intensity and skill.

This time, conman-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn takes on a seemingly impossible case in a corrupt small-town courtroom. A young Black man, accused of murder, faces a prosecutor who will do anything to secure a conviction—even if it means manipulating the system. With racism, power, and justice on the line, Eddie must outwit a truly sinister opponent in a case where the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Cavanagh masterfully builds tension, crafting a story that is as unsettling as it is electrifying. The courtroom drama is relentless, filled with jaw-dropping twists that keep you guessing. Beyond the thrilling legal battle, the novel also explores themes of systemic corruption, racial injustice, and the abuse of power, making it more than just a high-stakes thriller—it’s a novel with real weight.

With razor-sharp dialogue, well-drawn characters, and an unpredictable plot, The Devil’s Advocate is an unmissable read for fans of intelligent, fast-paced legal thrillers. If you love books that keep you hooked from start to finish while also tackling important issues, this one is a must-read.

This was a good one.

It's not the most original subject matter, but the book is very, very satisfying.

Our villain of the piece is almost iconic - so unique and another character gives some Cormac McCarthy character vibes.

This book is especially good for readers who love that Perry Mason vibe. You'll especially enjoy the trial parts of the story.

A very enjoyable read!

The Devil’s Advocate is an outstanding, powerful and thought provoking novel centering around the trial of a young black man for the murder of a young white girl in Alabama. Themes of racism, death penalty cases and electrocutions, white supremacy and a “crooked “ district attorney and sheriff are rampant throughout this well written novel. Several sentences are worth mentioning here — “Racism armed Americans better than the NRA could ever have hoped” and “Welcome to the South. You can carry a fully loaded machine gun, but you can’t carry an open can of beer.”
This is a novel that should be read by all and I highly recommend it. I thank NetGalley and Atria Books (and, of course Steve Cavanagh) for the opportunity to read and review this excellent book prior to its publication.

Again, I’m not a big fan of legal dramas and court room thrillers. I had already downloaded this book when I realized that. That being said, this book spend less time in the courtroom than the previous Eddie Flynn installment I’ve read, which I enjoyed that element. It is also told in multiple POV, like the other EF book I read. Eddie is a likable flawed character, a former conman with integrity.

What we have here is the tale as old as time in the South-a black man on trial for crimes against a non-black. No one wants to represent Andy Dubois so bring in Eddie Flynn to save the day and defeat white supremacy… for now. Or can they?

Thank you Atria Books, Steve Cavanagh and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions stated are my own.

Book #6 of the Eddie Flynn series. Another great legal drama unfolds as the team leaves NYC to travel to Alabama to defend an innocent man in a murder trial. They have to go up against a ruthless and sinister DA who wants to win at all costs. Full of new twists and turns it was very entertaining. 3.75 rounded up.
