Lots of twists and turns in this story that you aren’t expecting and a few that are. The real truth is not expected. It’s a great story of how someone goes to nothing to something by herself and has some bad choices mixed it. I got back and forth the whole book on if I like or dislike Maya due to her decisions.

Maya was an every day normal person until she became a reality TV star. When her career was over she became beauty brand entrepreneur and met Colin who is a member of the sterling family who is extremely wealthy and well known. They had a baby and then got married on their flight home from the wedding they were detoured to the UK due to the heiress to the sterling fortune being killed (Colin’s cousin). Maya then finds out Adrianna (the heiress) left the fortune to her leaving the family upset as they done believe she’s one of them. She’s on a mission to figure out why her and what is truly going on with the Sterling family. Maya also becomes the suspect for Adrianna’s murder and she’s working to clear her name.

Thank you to netgalley for a free ARC of a girl like us.

I really liked this book. I felt it had enough mystery/thriller to keep my interest. I really liked the different points of view, from Mya and Ariana. I did find it to be a little predictable but overall a great book.

A Girl Like Us by Anna Sophia McLoughlin is a fast-paced, suspenseful audiobook that pulls listeners into a world of wealth, power, and dark secrets. Set in 2004, the story follows Maya Miller, a former reality TV star who marries Colin Sterling, the heir to the renowned Sterling family, a name synonymous with both aristocratic titles and a vast media empire. To the public, Maya is either the epitome of the American dream or a gold-digger, but when Colin’s cousin Arianna is found murdered, Maya's life takes a drastic turn.

As the next heirs to the Sterling fortune, Maya and Colin become the focus of both media scrutiny and suspicion, especially as Maya is quickly labeled the prime suspect in Arianna’s death. Secluded at Silver North, the Sterling family’s sprawling ancestral estate, Maya begins to unravel the mystery, suspecting that the real killer is someone within the family. But Maya herself isn’t without secrets, and the line between truth and manipulation becomes increasingly blurred as she fights to clear her name.

McLoughlin does an excellent job of building tension and creating an atmosphere of intrigue. The story is full of twists and turns, with characters whose motives are hard to decipher. Maya’s determination to uncover the murderer, despite her own tangled past, makes her a compelling protagonist, while the luxurious yet suffocating setting of Silver North adds to the sense of isolation and danger.

Listeners will be kept on edge as Maya uncovers dark family secrets and plays her own hand in the high-stakes game of wealth, power, and deception. A Girl Like Us is an engaging and thrilling ride, perfect for fans of suspenseful mysteries with complex characters and high-society drama.

For fans of psychological thrillers and stories about family secrets, A Girl Like Us offers a tantalizing narrative that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Marrying into one of the wealthiest families around may sound like a sweet deal - especially when your husband is smart and attractive and you have a gorgeous baby with him - but as one-time reality TV start Maya Miller is discovering, there really are are no free lunches...

When the family gathers at one of their estates in a self-imposed "lockdown" after the female main heir is found murdered (because weirdly enough, *this* family has a main heir and lesser heirs, to keep things "organised"), things get progressively weirder. And Maya soon finds herself wondering if the killer is closer to home than anyone realises...

An enjoyable story of the rich and famous, and what some people are willing to do to stay that way!

Oh my god. I did not expect that ending, I was very confused for a bit (did it to myself trying to figure out the ending before having any sort of concrete info). I love books with a good twist and this one had plenty of twists and turns which made the story more entertaining. I was trying so hard to be on Maya’s side throughout the whole book but she continuously made bad decisions that would put her marriage at risk.

I loved the epilogue, specifically the part where Maya finally came to her senses and decided to stop being unfaithful to her husband, I get he could’ve been a little more helpful throughout the whole ordeal but that did not excuse what she was doing with his COUSIN. Besides the cheating (on someone who did not deserve it) the story was enjoyable and the narrator—Allyson Morgan did an amazing job narrating.

"A Girl Like Us" pulled my attention as soon as I started listening! I did not want to stop listening! The Inheritance game meets Succession. A dark family secret.... actually many dark family secrets. I Love how there were so many twists and turns and you never knew where the story was headed. The way I couldn't predict where it was going made me super engaged!

I know this a book and it is fiction, but I do believe that maybe the family was a little far fetched? Of course I am sure that there are families out there with that much wealth and dirty secrets, but I do think that a few key points were taken a bit to far.

Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks and Landmark for allowing me the opportunity to listen to this book!

Like many wealthy families, the family drama is THICK. Former reality TV star marries most eligible bachelor, and things really start off with a bang! Following their honeymoon, the newlyweds are notified that the current heiress was found dead, and the entire family is to report to England for an investigation. Many questions hang in the air, most importantly however who will inherit the family fortune and reign next?
This story entails rich people problems with a pinch of mystery and thrill.

The story overall had a wise plot, but the way it was written definitely left it a little predictable. The characters weren't my favorite, and I think that is why I struggled with them and the storyline.

The narration of the story was well done. Emotions were properly conveyed, and I truly think the narration is what helped me get through the book and finish it.

This book has gotten mixed reviews but i thought it was a super fun time!!! Very saltburn meets knives out-i loved the setting and although i did guess the twist a bit early on (it wasn’t subtle) i still couldn’t wait to see where it went and rooted for Maya!

Reading Method: Audiobook

NetGalley ALC provided in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book. I thought the story was intriguing and most of the main characters were interesting and had a lot of personality. Sometimes the amount of characters and the connections between them got a little overwhelming. But for the most part I was able to follow along just fine.
I thought the narrator did a good job of keeping the large cast of characters separate and feeling like they each had their own voice and style.
The story started out a little slow for me but really picked up around the halfway point. Some parts of the main characters journey felt a little repetitive but it didn't bother me. I liked that she was a strong willed FMC who had a lot of obstacles to overcome and she didn't back down.
Overall I enjoyed this book and there were many plot points and twists that I didn't see coming. It was a wild ride and I had a good time.

⭐⭐⭐3.5 Stars

A Girl Like Us is an atmospheric, mysterious exploration of the rich and powerful Sterlings. Our story starts in the perspective of Maya - who has married in to the Sterlings - and her new husband having to detour after their honeymoon due to a death in the family, heiress Ariana.

The story explores the short time after Ariana's death where curious turns take us through Ariana's life and wishes after death

I find the story interesting and engaging, with writing that really set the scene and put you into the world of the Sterlings and their secrets. I loved the setting of the scenes, and the mystery, but felt a bit of depth in the characters was lacking. There were groundbreaking revelations, but they didn't feel groundbreaking as the characters weren't developed enough for me to be attached to them.

Additionally, the development of the plot was a step ahead of our main characters understanding, so it felt a bit obvious a few chapters before Maya realised what was happening. This made the story (while interesting and keeping my interest) a little less edhe-of-my-seat.

The audio of A Girl Like Us was excellent - the narrator portrayed Maya excellently, and had an excellent accent for the English people within the story.

Thank you to NetGalley for this audiobook. I absolutely LOVED this book! While it was long, it was done so well I blew through it. The plot was great at keeping my interest. I loved the bits and pieces of Arianna along the way. The twists and turns were very well done. There was a lot of characters to keep track of but I didn’t find it challenging. Cannot wait for more from this author.

So so sorry to say that I could not get into this one at all and I DNFd it pretty early on. Rich people behaving badly is so hit and miss for me. Sometimes I find them utterly entertaining and sometimes, like with A Girl Like Us, I found the characters boring and somewhat unbearable. I don't recommend this one unless you absolutely love the rich people behaving badly thriller trope.

Thank you @NetGalley and @RBmedia for the audio ARC. Wow, this story starts out so calm and happy and than bang everything changes. Told in duel pov from Maya, the new bride, and Arianna, the dead heiress. This thriller is full of suspense and twist and turns, a fun read.

Absolutely amazing!

It's 2004 and former reality TV star and party girl Maya Miller has just married the most eligible bachelor on the planet: Colin Sterling, of the globally famous Sterling family whose history of aristocratic titles and land holdings rival a British royal and whose media empire is comparable to the Murdochs. To some, Maya represents the American dream. To others, a gold digger. But when Colin's cousin Arianna, the heiress to the family's immense fortune, is found murdered, Maya is thrust into the spotlight: first as she is revealed to be the next heiress to the fortune, and then as the prime suspect.

Silver house is now on lockdown for their safety but Maya knows differently. Maya begins to uncover all the secrets of the family and who each person really is...

I always hate ranking ARCs low :') I feel guilty... but... this one was just.. eh...
I didn't hate this but I didn't particularly like it either. The MC is not one you can really get behind - her personality is dull and the aspects that are developed show her to have... questionable morals, and not really even in the way that makes it interesting. The rest of the characters are similarly one sided and hollow, with the exception of Ariana who is kinda interesting.
The plot is... slow. Nothing really happens until the very end, by which point, I was more looking forward to being finished than I was finding out how the mystery unfolded. Ultimately I found this really forgettable and the only thing I really liked was the audiobook narrator who did a good job.

*4.5 rounded down* If you love rich and messed-up families, this is a must read for you! The book could easily be a Netflix series.

This was a juiicccyyy ride; rich people acting up and secrets upon secrets. I finished this book in less than 24 hours as the book had me hooked from start to finish. Think masterclass in dysfunctiona family- that's this book. Everyone’s a little shady, but Maya, the morally gray heroine, fits right in. She's determined to win, and it makes her the perfect addition to the Sterling clan—who are like wolves in designer clothes. Seriously, this family’s chaos makes the plot pop!

The book has the creepy, locked-room thriller vibe that’ll leave you feeling claustrophobic but also totally hooked. By the end, I was completely floored. The dual POVs were genius, the characters felt real, and the setting? Exceptional work. The narrator, Allyson Morgan, did a phenomenal job in bringing Maya and the plot to life.

Thank you Netgalley & RBmedia for the ARC!

It was very entertaining, but was the cheating necessary? Our main FMC is hard to root for and makes so many questionable decisions. She also basically gets handed all the clues. All the information about the family members are not learned by interacting them, but just told either to the reader directly or said blatantly by other characters to our gossiping with our fmc. In the middle it lulled with perhaps unnecessary scenes (like the club scene) and the end just rushes so much information to wrap up the reveal with a big bow. Overall, it was fun, but wasn’t as grappling as it thought it was being.

So good!!! I loved that while it wasn’t completely unexpected it still kept you on the edge of the seat.

I gave A Girl Like Us by Anna Sophia McLoughlin 4 stars—it was an enjoyable read with some strong points, but also a few things that didn’t quite work for me.

The best part of this book, hands down, was the atmosphere. Almost the entire story takes place in a creepy old mansion filled with hidden tunnels, secret rooms, and things tucked away in floorboards. That kind of setting always pulls me in, and it really added to the mystery. Speaking of which, the mystery itself was solid. I saw a few twists coming, but I didn’t fully predict who the final culprit would be, which kept me engaged.

That said, I had a few small issues. There were a lot of characters introduced very quickly at the start, and I found myself needing to keep track of names just to follow along. I also felt like the book could have been a bit shorter—it dragged in places where things could’ve been tightened up. Lastly, there was something about the writing style that made it feel more like a YA novel, even though it’s supposed to be an adult thriller. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but it just had that vibe.

I listened to the audiobook version, and I thought the narrator did a great job bringing the story to life.

Overall, it’s a fun and atmospheric read, especially if you enjoy eerie mansion settings and twisty mysteries. While it wasn’t perfect, I’d still recommend it to fans of thrillers.
