After a break in at a bank, officials begin negotiations. They believe a magician, Violet, had broken in and stole documents. I liked the concept but the change in the points of view was confusing for me. At times, I was not sure who was talking or telling the story. The book has very graphic sex encounters and vulgar language. This just was not a book for me.
Thank you for the arc, unfortunately I did not finish it, I just wasn't the right audience for this book.
His novel had a very clever plot that kept me intrigued. I should have paid more attention because what is real and what is not?
Many thanks to Quotestork Media Inc and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was really hoping to love this book but I couldn't get into the book or even care to find out what would happen to the characters. And I just don't think this book was made for me.
Violet can levitate, walk through glass and appear to be in more than one place in the space of a breath. Everything about her is mystery and intrigue and Carter Borden can't get her out of his mind but he is still struggling to get over the heartbreak of his ex leaving him. Though the draw to Violet is inescapable, her abrupt mood swings and sudden disappearances add to his confusion. Every moment with Violet is steeped in magic that makes it hard to distinguish reality from illusion.
It begins at the end where we meet a character that we don't encounter again until we are wrapping up the story. From that point, the narrator shifts between the two main male characters which was slightly confusing for me at first. Fortunately, the character change was announced by a profile illustration to indicate who the speaker would be so once I realized that they weren't the same person, it was easier to keep up. At that point, I started to settle in and mistakenly thought I could predict how things were going to go from there but I could not have been more wrong. Readers should be aware that sex and violence are prevalent throughout. There are some very disturbing twists and a shocking ending that had me thinking about Violets and Violence for days after I finished reading. It is an undeniably unique story with an intensity that won't let go.
