This picture book is about a young girl's experience shopping for a Mother's Day card for her mother. As she browses the racks of cards, she sees lots of white moms in the illustrations, but can't find any card with a mom who looks like her own South Asian mother. Throughout the story, she reflects on what her mother is like, and when she gets home, she creates a handmade card with an illustration of her mother.

This book will appeal to people who identify with the main character's culture, or who relate to her struggle to find a product that represents her family. However, I didn't find the story very convincing, because the vast majority of Mother's Day cards don't illustrate a person at all. Mother's Day cards normally involve flowers, garlands, butterflies, birds, other animals, hearts, fruit, and characters like Snoopy. This story's emphasis on all of the white, Western moms on the cards didn't seem believable to me, since it's much less common to see a person on a Mother's Day card at all.

This is an adorable and heart warming book about a girl trying to find a card for her mother. She finds cards, but none of the cards embody the appearance or the spirit of her mother. I love this and would happily read over and over to my children.

What a precious story about a little girl who wants to do something special for her mom for Mother’s Day. However, she can’t find the right card so she instead does something more special, makes on for her. The pictures were so vibrant and bright. Thank you for the ARC.

It's Mother's Day and a little girl has a simple gift idea: a sweet card for her mother. The only problem? Brown and beautiful, her mom looks nothing like the mostly white moms on the available cards! Luckily, our girl finds a creative and heartfelt way to *truly* make the card her own.

This is a beautiful book with vibrant, gorgeous illustrations, based on an all too often true story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Very sweet! I love how this book highlights the importance of creativity and hope in the face of underrepresentation, in such a thoughtful way. Of course, the author doesn't explicitly talk about underrepresentation, but there is an underlying tone that is conveyed through the main character's thoughts and feelings. The author found such a perfect balance with this because it gets readers thinking without making them feel sad or hopeless. Additionally, the layout of this story's plot was flawless, with frustration building and then ending with an adorable solution that the main character came up with herself. Even further, this book mentioned a lot of specific cultural things (food, fashion, activities, etc.) which adds a lot of depth and personality to this story. Lastly, and similarly, the illustrations beautifully showed the uniqueness of the main character's mother, and everything about this book celebrates just how special mothers are. Bravo!

A little girl wants to find the perfect card for her mother, but she can't find anything at the store that shows what her mother is like. So instead of buying a card, she makes a card and pours her love into it. This is a sweet story.
