I did not particularly enjoy this book, but I generally don't love self-help books, so I think my lack of enthusiam about this book is mostly a reader problem rather than an issue with the book itself. Therefore, I still gave it 4 stars. As far as self-help books go, this one seemed full of decent and medically-backed information, real clinical experience and understanding towards a reader who could potentially be suffering with high functioning depression.
So despite not being in love with this book, there were some things I appreciated. The author demonstrated lots of compassion for all different kinds of people from all different walks of life. I feel that one of my issues with self-help books is that the advice can sometimes include suggestions that require means and opportunities that not all people have. And while this author was definitely considerate of their readers potentially coming from a variety of cultures, lifestyles and socioeconomic backgrounds, I felt that they may not have stretched their imagination about what other people's lives might look like.
I also wish the Title and Blurb had been a little clearer on the specificity of the topic covered in thia book. I have mostly only heard the term "high functioning" in reference to Autism, never Depression. So it was unclear to me that the subject of this book is high functioning depression and not the conjunction of high functioning autism and depression.
There is some good advice in here and this book could be really helpful for anyone who would have a quality of life improvement from a few lifestyle adjustments. For more servere cases though, this book will likely only help by urging those people to seek personalized help. I did really appreciate the section on what to look for and ask when seeking counseling and medical help.
Overall, I think this is a good read for the specific audience that needs it, but a pass for any readers who are just looking to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world and mental health issues.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for the ARC audiobook. I had high hopes for this book with a forward from Mel Robbins and some of the early accolades. The audience is pretty specific. I am a millennial in corporate America so I technically am the target audience, but I do not like or want to be in corporate America. I don’t strive for success in the work place. We are all tired. I survive the work place. There is more of a culture problem than a high functioning depression problem for what this book is trying to do.

This is an insightful exploration of a form of depression that often goes unrecognized. Drawing from her personal experiences and professional expertise, the author sheds light on high-functioning depression, a condition where individuals maintain outward success while grappling with internal emotional struggles.
This book provides a variety of tools designed to help readers identify and address the underlying issues contributing to their hidden depression. By combining clinical insights with relatable anecdotes, she provides a framework that is both accessible and practical for those seeking to understand and manage HFD.
This book is a valuable resource for anyone trying to understand more and determine if this impacts you. It serves as both a mirror and a guide, helping readers acknowledge their struggles and providing actionable steps toward healing.

This book is great, and helps to make you think of things on a deeper level. This is a book everyone should read.

I like the touch of color on the cover (and how the authors name was included in that). I haven't read a book on this topic before so that was interesting.

This was a great Audiobook and the Author did a great job of narrating it.
This book was an eye opener for me of what High Functioning is and how one might have hidden depression. This book spoke to me and I could see myself as a High Functioning person with depression as well as things that I have done on my own to help me feel better, do things to help myself move forward and add things to help me deal with stress. There are some good ideas of how to help yourself stop, recognize and then do things for your everyday wins so that you feel and see progress. But you also need to let people help you and don't forget to celebrate wins.
I will for sure go back to this book from time to time for inspiration.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.

I really enjoyed this audio! It was fascinating and helped me work on my own high functioning depression. The author provides scientific info but also tips and tools of self-help.

This was a great audiobook exploring topics of high functioning depression, which is so often overlooked due to the productivity of the person suffering. This book provides easy to implement strategies and skills to improve quality of life. Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio | Little, Brown Spark for a copy of this book for an honest review.

"High Functioning" by Dr. Judith Joseph is a really insightful book.
I found her advice practical and easy to follow, especially with the real-life examples she shared from her clients which made the concepts much easier to understand. A great read for anyone interested in mental health and self-awareness.
Not last I would like to thank to NetGalley, author and the publisher for offering me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I give this book 4.5 stars. Being someone who is in the psychology field, I was eager to listen to this/read this and I absolutely went for it. I have been in the field for over 10 years and I myself suffer from depression so I related to so many of the symptoms she was speaking about. I like how she broke everything down so that EVERYONE could understand it better, not just those in the field. I really hope this opens up minds of those who just refuse to believe that this is possible. I have recommended this to so many people and to my former colleagues.

This book explored high functioning depression as a whole diagnosis itself instead of just symptoms of depression or other common topics such as burnout. The author breaks down the 5 V’s—validation, venting, values, vision, and vitals—to help navigate high-functioning depression. Nothing here felt particularly new or groundbreaking, but honestly, the book itself felt like an act of validation: a reminder that this is a real thing, and that some of it can come from trauma (big T or little t). It’s written in a super easy-to-digest way, though it might be worth grabbing a physical copy so you can reference the appendices more easily.

You know how they say “sometimes a book finds you when you most need it!” Yeah this was one of those moments. As someone who suffers from depression and has experienced the high functioning side a majority of the time and also the very very low functioning sides, I related to so much of what the author was saying. I felt seen and heard and I want to share this with so many of my friends who are like me stuck in this high functioning depressive state. I will be buying a physical copy ASAP so that I can go back and reflect on the suggestions and how they’ve helped.

This book was not for me. That doesn't mean it's bad, but listening to the author's descriptions of herself and her patients made me feel like I've never been a high functioning person even at my best! No shade to her, she's clearly a high achiever, and I think others who are similarly doing it all, all the time, may relate better than I did, and get more out of this content. I will look for something aimed more at the medium functioning person...
The audiobook narration was great. Often having authors read their own work can be less than optional, but Judith Joseph has a very clear and pleasant voice, good pacing, very easy to listen to.
3 stars for my personal enjoyment of the content, 5 stars for the narration.

This book discussed what High Functioning Depression is and different treatment options. I genuinely think this book changed my life and the way I look at my high-functioning depression. I look forward to implementing this book into my everyday life.

You can get out of bed, but you don’t have the motivation to wash the dishes. You can go to social functions, but you have difficulty concentrating on conversations due to brain dog. You’re productive at work, but you’re burned out and have a hard time saying “no.” On the outside, everything may look fine. But on the inside, you’re drowning — or just apathetic.
HIGH FUNCTIONING by Dr. Judith Joseph looks at the often-hidden high-functioning depression and gives readers the tools they need to reignite the spark of joy and live in the present.
I listened to HIGH FUNCTIONING on audiobook, and it kept me engaged until the very end. Dr. Joseph does a great job explaining what HFD looks and feels like, using human examples/anecdotes, and providing useful tools to live a happier, more fulfilled life. I plan on purchasing a physical copy for highlighting and tabbing pages.
Thank you to #NetGalley and Little Brown Spark/Hachette Audio for an advanced audio copy of #HighFunctioning.

If youve ever suspected you might be experiencing depressive symptoms while still having your affairs firmly I order, this book is for you.
This is a straightforward but insightful exploration of high functioning depression and its highly specific traits that make it distinct from low functioning depression. Not only does this contain helpful checklist to help determine whether the readers might score moderately high or extremely high o the various dimensions of HFD, but it also contains a path towards better mental health, because one does not need to be in a crisis to take preventive measures.
Will definitely give it more thought as I make my way through my days.
Thank you Netgalley for this ALC.

⭐⭐ 2 Stars
I was intrigued and felt this book had promise when I first started it. The idea of high-functioning depression is not a new one - I believe in the past more referred to as a categorisation of the effect of symptoms of depression - but this book explores it as if it's it's own diagnosis - one with symptoms of both depression, and work-triggered-burnout. Like a lot of books around burnout, it is heavily focused around work behaviour, which i personally feel is a disservice, as I believe a lot of people feel this way despite not working ridiculous hours in high-stress jobs.
Perhaps I am too deep in the world of psychology and self-help, but this book didn't feel groundbreaking to me. The information to help cure your high-functioning depression was the same as much of any self help book, just delivered slightly differently.
I appreciate most different self-help books despite similar content, as sometimes it takes the right one for the right person to get the message. However this one didn't hit any targets for me.
The steps and advice throughout the book are also not very neurodivergent friendly.
Overall, I would not recommend, and would point the average person to some other books before suggesting high functioning.
One thing to say, is that the audiobook being recorded by the author is an excellent choice. I appreciated the passion shares through her anecdotes.
Thank you to Hachette Audio and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the Audio ARC!
I LOVED this - as someone who, very comfortable can say after reading this book, suffers from High Functioning Depression....this was amazing. It was easy to understand, relatable, and I never felt judged or like a specimen to be studied. Fantastic resource with realistic options and ways to cope - I recommend this to pretty much everyone!

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I haven’t seen many books about high functioning depression and I think a lot of people deal with this. I really appreciated this read and found it really informative.

I think the interesting part of depression is that sometimes rather than being frozen, sullen, or unable to do tasks we overcompensate and do too much. This book helped me identify things that are associated with high functioning depression: taking on too many tasks, not allowing yourself to feel emotions, anhedonia, etc. I really enjoyed how client experiences were brought in to explain different symptoms and the way HFD can present. In the later part of the book, we are introduced with different ways to combat HFD. I found the different suggestions were helpful, and not repetitive information that I’ve read elsewhere. I’ve already recommended it to a few friends.
