Life in the Viking Great Army is an in depth and well-researched work. Whilst I was enjoying the content of the book, I ultimately had to stop listening to the audiobook as the narration was a struggle.
When listening to the excerpt, I found it a bit slow but decided to persist, as I thought speeding up the narration at 1.25 speed or more would solve the problem. For a while, this did help but ultimately, the changes in volume and almost breathy whispers, and jarring pronunciation (almost adding ‘r’ sounds into words that seemingly don’t have any) distracted me from the content and I found myself unable to continue.
This issue with narration will not be an issue for many others I am sure, and I look forward to picking up this book in a physical or digital format in the future.

I listened to the audiobook. I had difficulty with the audio version because I did not feel the narrator’s voice matched the subject matter. The narrator’s voice was lovely but very calming. It seemed like the narrator would have matched better with a relaxation, meditation, or lullaby.

That being said, the content of the text is very informative and interesting for those who have a keen interest in learning about the Vikings. I learned much about the Viking Great Army and how its presence impacted the political, economic, and social landscape of England.

It is not a light read but is well-researched and presented, and I would definitely recommend it for those interested in the topic.

I absolutely love this time period. Ever since I watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, the way the Saxons and Danes lived has been so fascinating to me.

So as I was reading this book, I was in total awe as to how many artifacts relating to the Danes were actually recovered. It just seems like such a shot in the dark that any of these artifacts are still out there intact waiting to be found.

But the fact that these artifacts were found and actually TELL A STORY, is incredible. This is why I love history: you can still get answers from a time period when you weren’t even there. The fact that their weapons and daily utensils tell us about how they lived once they entered England is astounding to me.

As for the audiobook, it was so fascinating to listen to this narrator when she spoke. Her voice was gentle, calm, informative, and her inflection of certain Gaelic or danish words was so accurate and historic I loved how it lended to the authenticity of the book.

I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who has any interest in the danish invasion of England and their continued presence in a country where they were considered invaders and had to adapt to this new world.
