The author’s writing was impeccable, however there were moments while reading that I thought there must have been an earlier book. Then I found out that it is a companion to a previous book by this author, The Hatmaker's Heart,. This is maybe why I couldn’t connect with the characters like 1 should have.
This was such a fun book! The story of the new-fangled concept of flying - and how a woman becomes a pilot, in an age where women did not do these things. Mittie breaks convention and becomes a part of those fearless women aviators who, like pioneer Amelia Earhart, founded a woman's flying society. Mittie is confronted with plans of her parents - being set up to fall in love with someone who they deemed worthy of their daughter and station, all the while slowly falling for someone else. She has great compassion on hurt animals and hurting friends too. She is dedicated and kind.
The story is engaging and brings to mid questions like how you can still obey your parents and follow your heart, and how you can break into a field that was thought of as only for men. It was an engaging book. I enjoyed it!
A bit of a slower paced read, I was delighted to find out that it is a companion to a previous book by this author, The Hatmaker's Heart. It was a pleasant experience revisiting a handful of familiar faces and meeting new ones along the way.
Mittie Humphreys has a thirst for adventure, and at times struggles under the responsibilities of her family's horse farm. She has a passion for horses and flying, pushing the limits at times. She is swept into the exhilarating world of flying, while fighting to balance her duties and her passions.
I loved the colorful characters, vibrant and flawed, like Calista and others. I really liked how her father lives his beliefs, even when it hurts.
In the end, this was a pleasant read, though at times slower and it seemed to go from one event to another, with a softer plot thread, showing characters as they showed themselves to Mittie in their varying shades of good and bad. I think that some characters I would have liked to see spend more time together, just simply because I liked them, and I wished that some threads had more of a solid satisfying conclusion, as well as a stronger focus on faith. A slow burn, but enjoyable nonetheless.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Mittie was an interesting character, and as we read her story, we met many other intriguing characters while learning what went on during aviation's early days. I loved the descriptions of the planes and the flights, and enjoyed the way the information on flight was presented in this fiction novel.
What I didn't care for was Mittie's relationships with men. She seemed very flighty in that regard to me, and I didn't buy the credibility of the way her romance was resolved at the end. She was way too hung up on another man for almost the entire story for me to be able to buy that her feelings would change so suddenly.
This was a very interesting book, but the relationship aspect kept it from being great.
