A short story about Serenity Jones from a previous novel, Leaving Time, and how she used her psychic gift. After meeting a young war widow, Serenity finds the lost soldier however this appears to be the first step in her life being thrown in to chaos.

It was an interesting idea and I enjoyed the extra effects to try and immerse the listener but overall I was left feeling like something was missing. I felt like the narrator really worked for the characters and added to the listening experience.

I want to thank NetGalley for approving me for an ARC of this book. I'm a huge fan of Jodi Picoult so I was excited to listen to this one.

It's been quite a few years since I read Leaving Time so my memory is a little foggy, if anything this short story made me want to read it again.

From what I do remember of Leaving Time, Serenity Jones was an interesting character and I did want to know more about her. This short story tells us how she came to be and her rise to fame.

It was entertaining, enjoyable and tense. I wish it hadn't ended so quickly but that defeats the point of a short story.

I was blown away by this audiobook. The background sounds and enhancements really brought the whole story to life. It’s quite a dark book, about ghosts and spirits. It’s really freaky when the background noises start as it feels like you’re right there in the spirit vision.

I don't know why Bolinda made an audio-book of this 2014 prequel full length novel in 2025. While it was well read (I listened to the audiobook) and well written it had some things that felt weird in 2025. Serenity the psychic has two spirit guides. we are told that one is black and one is gay. This has absolutely no bearing on the plot and never comes up again. It's odd.
The story itself is sweet and piqued my interest enough that I may well read (listen to) the full length novel.

A super quick short story which is engaging & entertaining.

Makes me want to go back & read all Jodi's early stuff again.

Before listening to this short story, written by Jodi Picoult, I re-read Leaving Time; to reacquaint myself with Serenity Jones.

Serenity is a medium, who at one point, had achieved a cult celebrity status. Until a very public incident, changed her life. Where There’s Smoke gives the reader insight into that situation. Senator John McCoy, and his wife Jenny’s son, has been kidnapped. After an excruciating week long wait, they accept Serenity’s offer of help.

This is a very short story, approximately an hour. I personally enjoy a longer read/listen, but this felt like an extension, rather than a standalone book. It helped to fill out the details of Serenity’s life, prior to Leaving Time. The narration by Amy Finegan is good, each of the voices are distinct and expressive.

I would recommend reading Leaving Time, before Where There’s Smoke, to help give context. I felt it ended quite abruptly, I think I needed a little more. Maybe learning more of her transition to the Serenity we meet in the later book.

This was an engaging and thought-provoking listen. At just over an hour long, this audiobook is a quick yet immersive experience. Jodi Picoult’s storytelling draws you in from the very first chapter, blending mystery, drama, and supernatural elements in a compelling way. The narrator does a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, making it even more engaging.

While the story is intriguing, some parts felt a bit rushed. Still, it’s a captivating audiobook. If you enjoy short, gripping stories with a mix of drama and supernatural this one is worth a go!

I have to say I enjoy almost anything written by Jodi Picoult and this was no different! Serenity is quite a character and, perhaps, deserves some of what happens to her in this story. When I requested it, I didn't realise it wasn't a full novel, but I think the story was still entertaining and I was immersed throughout. I'd love to hear more stories of dead people with messages to send home. This is very 'Ghost' movie-like and was a satisfying listen.

This is a short story by Jodi Picoult about a psychic who tries to help solve a crime. It’s pretty entertaining but I don’t think it could be any longer than it is.

Quick short story by a master storyteller. Serenity has special powers, or does she? She turned her ability to talk with spirits into a television show. The story has spirit guides, poltergeist, lonely partners - it has it all and puts a lot into a short amount of space.

I listened to this on audiobook - the narrator was easy to listen to and there were even a handful of sound effects.

I recommend taking a few minutes to read this story by Jodi Picoult.

Extremely entertaining short story. The narrator does a great job and is easy on the ear! I loved the concept and fast pace. Great piece of writing by Jodi as ever. I would love her to expand this idea and the main character into a full book. Enjoy!

I'm a big fan of Jodi Picoult and the premise of the book sounded really up my street. I didn't know that Picoult had written a short story too.
The audio book is more like an audio play - it isn't just a narrator reading the words, but there are background sounds, and the listening experience is really atmospheric.
The audiobook narrator was brilliant at bringing the different characters to life.

The plot was really intriguing, I was just disappointed it ended so quickly - I would have loved this as full length novel - there was so much left to explore.

Years ago I read and loved Leaving Time but I was only reading physical books and didn’t know this short story existed.
I really enjoyed this re-release and the new cover is awesome and fits the vibe of the story. The narrator was great and the sound effects were cool!

Serenity has had a gift for her whole life. She can see and communicate with dead and missing people. She has a show which has made her famous and she doesn't meet the people who want to reach out to their loved ones before the show is in progress. This has helped solidify her following. That is, of course, until she has two disastrous programs.

This is a short story. I had the audio version. I listened to the entire performance in about 1 1/2 hours. I thought the story was a great introduction to the character and I found that I wanted to know more about her. The narrator is great.

I didn't like this book. I usually really enjoy Jodi Picoult's books, but this fell flat for me. I liked the physic aspect, it was unusual for her.. looking forward to her next release.
