It took me a really long time to finally get to this book, but I did end up enjoying it. Not as much as the Sookie Stackhouse books, but I would continue the series.
I will be brutally honest, this book was one of the reasons why I stopped using NetGalley for a while. I did not enjoy the book and did not even finish the book. Yes, it was the second in a series, but I expected to be able to get up to speed quickly. I didn't.
I expected to enjoy the writing style. I didn't.
I expected so much more that I was disappointed and turned off of the whole genre for a couple of years, dabbling in the whole vampire/were* environment only infrequently. The concept was interesting, but in my opinion the implementation left a lot to be desired.
I love pretty much everything I have read by Charlaine Harris and this was not any different. After finishing the first book in the Midnight Texas series I was excited to read this one and see what this interesting cast of characters was up to. I enjoyed the characters and the writing and the world surrounding them. Great book.
If you liked the first book, if you love her characters from other books, then you will like this book. It's a fun read.
This book was much more coherent than the first and easier to follow. There's a ton of mystery in this little town of midnight and Harris slow peels back the layers. It reminds me of the first books in the sookie series where everything slow builds. The plot and new adventures for the crew in Midnight seemed like it might tank the town. I really enjoyed the glimpses into old faces from Bob Temps and I hope to see more of them in the next book.
It's a little slow in pacing in some areas but still intriguing with all the quirky characters and an exciting plot.
Great series and I can't wait to see what more she has in store for us readers!
Although I read the first book in this series and I wasn't overwhelmed by it, I still picked this one based on how much I loved the Sookie books. I did not finish this one. I just did not get as connected to the characters. I may give the series a chance later but for now, it just didn't click.
