The first 30 pages end on an evocative and poignant note. This excerpt has me intrigued and I'll likely read the full book.
I only received the chapter sampler and it was enough. The book did not grasp my attention. A lot of people really like this story but it is not for me.
I was looking forward to reading this based on the summary alone.
The story puts you right in the middle of what is going on without explaining anything. It was hard to follow.
Thank you for the excerpt of Seraphina, I absolutely loved it and I'm now convinced to add it to my TBR and read this asap!
I received a copy of this sneak peek from Random House Books for Young Readers through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
When I grabbed this sneak peek, I was confusing it with a different book (Serafina and the Black Cloak) that I've had my eye on for a while now. Granted, that wouldn't have stopped me from getting it because sneak peeks on Netgalley are somewhat limited I'm finding, but it's not the book I thought I was peeking into. And I realize the covers for the two books are very different, but books get new covers all the time, so I thought that's what happened here. But in spite of my mix-up, I was rather pleased with this sneak peek.
I was only treated to a very small portion of this book, so there are a lot of things that I do not understand about this world yet, or Seraphina herself. Really, the only way for me to have a full understanding of the world from a sneak peek would be for there to be a huge info dump right at the beginning, and that would have been rather boring, so I'm glad it didn't happen, even if I am frustrated by not really knowing anything about the world I just dipped my toes into.
From what I could gather, in this world dragons can shapeshift to take on human form, but they are required to wear bells so as to be easily identifiable to humans, although there seem to be some exceptions to that rule. And because dragons were dangerous creatures in the past, tensions between the two races are quite high. I felt that there were some comparisons to be made to current relations between different groups amongst society in our world, although with only the sneak peek, there are no easy conclusions to be reached on that score.
I'm also left with some suspicions about Seraphina's origin, and there is a mystery about a certain saint that is mentioned that I'm interested to uncover as well.
I am definitely interested in reading more from this book and have added it to my wish list because I'm not allowed to buy any more books this pay period, but I will definitely be buying it at some point in the future so I can continue this story.
i have always wanted to read this book so thank you for the chapter sample! makes me want to keep reading the book, so i requested it from the library. thanks netgalley!
Dragons are always a great idea, but the author has fantastic imagination and her world is intriguing. Recommended especially for dragon and music lovers.
Why Seraphina has gone under my radar for so long is something I do not know. What I do know is that I will be giving the full book a read and I may have found a new series to obsess over. This is not something I am angry at. I look forward to diving further into Hartman's world.
I found it hard to get into (and this was only the first few chapters!) It was a bit tricky keeping the characters straight, and figuring out what the made-up terms mean...plus it really bothered me how Seraphina has known Orma her whole life, yet talks to him like she isn't used to his customs (I get that the author is just trying to illustrate the cultural differences, but it just seemed jarring and unrealistic.) But, there was enough mystery and intrigue that I might go and read the whole book sometime.
"The truth may not be told. Here is an acceptable lie."
An interesting prologue, to say the least. I'm excited to finally get started on this one!
Medieval world to fantasy and a clash between two spieces - humans and dragons. Seraphine, the main character is very unique character. From the prologue we can see she was no average infant. The prologue begins with the traumatic birth in which Seraphina's mother dies and father, trying to hide the truth from everyone, moves with his daugter to capital.
"Seraphina" is a unique read. Dragons fold themselves in human forms and co-exist with humans. The treaty's anniversary between the spieces draws near, when the Prince Rufus is killed, in very dragon like way. The tensions are very high. Great idea for a plot, that reminds the reader of famous books such as "Eragon" .
Politcal tension on the edge of possible war, and big secret that Seraphina tries to hide from the world, that could put her life in danger are very promising for a debut YA fantasy.
Seraphina was an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
I'd heard decent things about this book and I'm glad that I found a sample to try. Unfortunately, this wasn't for me. The writing style was very confusing. The first person POV didn't read very clear to me and it was hard to follow what was being seen and what was happening. Some of the dialogue was okay and while the concept seems good on the synopsis, I won't read the full length novel.
This was amazing, I can't wait until I get the chance to read the full book.
Wonderful book for YA readers, musicians, and others who don't fit in--and a cautionary tale/tail for our new political situation.
The author's writing style is excellent.
The Prologue was interesting and engaging. However, the opening chapter was overly complex. Despite this, it was a fascinating world the author was describing and refreshingly original.
It would require a reader with perseverance to continue reading. As this is aimed at the YA market and the female readers within it, I hope there has been a good response for this talented writer.
