The Quiet Wife by J.M Cannon is a tense and gripping thriller with many twists and turns, suspense and intrigue.

When Katie and her husband Howard come into an insane amount of money from the sale of Howard's business, they decide to move to a new off the grid housing development in the Colorado mountains. Katie wants to believe that this could be their fresh start on a new life. But as a journalist Katie also has different motives for choosing this particular development. Her new dream home has ties to a rash of missing girls. This is a personal case for Katie because the missing girls all have similarities to Katie's best friend Claire's disappearance. But when she gets stuck in a blizzard alone at the house, Katie realizes that she may have gone too far in her search for the truth.

Okay so this book was tense! Many twists and turns kept me engaged and I loved the atmospheric setting of the Colorado wilderness. I definitely did not know who to trust or who to even like at all. At some point I had to suspend my beliefs a bit but it was all tied up nicely at the end. Definitely recommend to readers of mystery / thriller and true crime!

Thank you to NetGalley, J.M Cannon, and Embla Books for this ARC! Publication date is April 8th 2025.

Cannon has crafted a very suspenseful read that kept me glued to my Kindle.
This story just drew me in from the first page and I was lost. From the very beginning this was a gripping and unputdownable story.

1⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for an advanced copy of The Quiet Wife.

A woman in her 30s realizes that she is not where she thought she would be in life at this point. She has a shaky marriage, no kids, and a lackluster career. But she has the idea to make a change and move to Colorado. But she realizes that this new housing project holds keys to her past.

This was the most ridiculous plot I have ever read. All of the characters were bad and did not have many redeeming qualities. I was not a fan.

An excellent thriller from JM Cannon who filled this story with red herrings galore and still managed a twist that took me by surprise.

I'm eager to dig in more in JM Cannon's books.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review.

this is such a off the scale book. but somehow in the best of ways. and once you let your guard down and just tell yourself to enjoy the ride...you so do. because its such a thrill.
i felt so much for the main character. how one moment can both change your life and dictate many or all of your future moments. particularly if it just sits and waits for you or is this weight that never leaves.
this is what happens here. and moves, and life and all the emotional decisions seem to somehow often come back to the loss of a dear friend. it goes too far because a big move is dictated by the possibility that your friends disappearance might be linked to the place you are moving to.
i wasnt quite sure who to trust in this. and that dark undercurrent played out well throughout.

What did I just read! And why could I not put it down?

There is so much to unfold here, without giving anything away. First, I could never be a quiet wife. In that way, the main character, Katie, irritated me. I disliked her husband, Howard, from the get go!

After coming into a ridiculous amount of money, Katie and Howard buy a second home in Colorado in a “new” somewhat “off the grid” development. Katie is a journalist and has reason to believe the developer might be involved in a cult like existence, complete with trafficking and murder.

Wouldn’t you want to move there?

The story moves very quickly and I did like that about the book. I was really into it, until about halfway through. It started to get outlandish and unbelievable, but I will admit I kept reading.

The ending. It put me over the edge. So completely ridiculous that I could not believe I stuck it out and that’s what I got at the end. If you like unbelievable, you might enjoy it.

I do think I would try another book from this author!

Thank you to @netgalley and @emblabooks for this advanced readers copy.

I've started preferring more bonkers American thrillers to the endless parade of cookie-cutter friend-group exotic-location murder ones we get in the UK, and JM Cannon's The Quiet Wife is a good example. Katie and her wealthy husband join an isolated luxury housing development in the Colorado mountains after Katie starts to believe there may be a connection between this location and a series of missing girls spanning decades. While Katie wants to revive her career as a journalist, there's also a personal connection for her, as, when she was a student, her best friend went into the woods and never came out again. As Katie makes a series of increasingly bizarre discoveries and a blizzard traps her in her house, she starts to believe that she, too, might be in danger. This one definitely goes crazy, but in a great way, especially because the twist, while implausible in its own right, makes sense of a lot of the nitpicks I had with the plot before we get the big reveal. I loved the book's horror movie/secret cult/true crime vibes, and the only thing I really disliked was the fate of a certain character, which I found unpleasant and tasteless. However, this was a lot of fun. 3.5 stars.
