This was a good plot but I didn’t really engage with any of the characters. There were secrets, lies. relationships, family…all very good elements. It was an enjoyable read.
Many thanks to Atria Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
You can’t ever go wrong with a Lisa Jewell book! This was a unique story about a man who is married to his third wife and his two precious wives and all their children. There’s mystery but also so many interesting characters who are affected by Adrian’s choices and whims. An excellent read!
This one was a solid four stars up until the very end. And then it fell flat. I had high expectations because I’ve loved other books from this author. The storyline was good, the characters intriguing. And I was expecting some sort of a twist or revealing at the end. But sadly that didn’t happen. Just...an ending.
I am not typically a mystery reader, but I am hooked on Lisa Jewell's brand of mystery/domestic drama. Her blend of family drama/character study with mystery is the perfect mix. In The Third Wife, Adrian is a man in love with love. And convinced that if he is happy and content... then surely his family is as well. This family includes two ex-wives and five children. When his current wife steps off a curb after a night of drinking and is killed by an oncoming bus, there are many questions. Was it a terrible accident? Was it suicide? And if so... why?
What follows is a story that shifts between past and present and slowly reveals all the many cracks beneath the surface. Adrian was still very much immersed in the lives of his ex-wives and considered the lot of them (current wife, former wives, children) to be one big, extended, happy family of sorts. As the layers are peeled away, it's obvious not every family member was as happy and content as Adrian. There were hurt feelings, resentments, anger and jealousy. Jewell did a wonderful job of revealing the truth that simmered underneath the veneer of happy lives and well-adjusted families. And showing that maybe the biggest lies are the ones we tell ourselves.
I love all of Lisa Jewell's books - I have been a fan since she first started writing. I love the turn her books have taken in the last ten years to a sort of curious mystery that always satisfies in the end. This book does not disappoint.
This book is hard to categorize. Is it chick-lit, family drama, suspense, maybe a bit of a psychological thriller? Whatever genre you fit it into, it will still be a great story.
Adrian is a serial husband. He has two families and this is his third wife. Are they going to have a child? Do they want to add to his ever growing family? But then, Maya, his third wife dies. Was it a suicide? Was it an accident? Did someone push her in front of the bus? When Adrian's son finds a folder of hate emails on her computer, the waters get muddied and Adrien sets out on a quest to get to the bottom of the mystery.
At first I thought that this family was too good to be true. Adrian and his two previous wives, Susie and Caroline, their five children, and his third wife Maya, all seem to have a cohesive relationship that is hard to believe. Three women, all having been married to the same man getting along so well? I can understand the siblings getting along, but do they really? Who is sending the hate emails to Maya? It has to be someone close to the family because they know too much. And then who is Jane? This stranger that comes to check out Maya's cat to see if she wants to bring it home. She appears to be stalking the family, but why? As we learn more about Adrian, his children and ex-wives, we learn that all is not as it seems. The children are troubled, the wives a bit jealous and Maya was not as happy as it seemed.
I enjoyed this story, never knowing exactly where it was going. As I said earlier, is it a mystery? How does Maya really die and can Adrian learn to live without another wife and family? This was not my first Lisa Jewell book and it won't be my last. I enjoyed the journey this story took and I recommend it to lovers of twisty stories.
I loved this book. It wasn't your traditional thriller, but it kept my interest and although I predicted aspects of the end, there were still things that kept me guessing.
I love Lisa Jewell and it's nice to see her tackling more adult subject matter. Characters were well fleshed out. Story interesting. I will look forward to the Author's next book!
DNF. Too slow moving for me. I was expecting more of a psychological thriller. No rating.
I think the premise of this book is good and it started off strong, then it slowed down and at times I struggled to continue. I am not sorry I stuck with it. I enjoyed it for the most part. I liked the mystery aspect, and the characters were believable. I would try another book by this author. LIked the book fine. Didn't love it or hate it.
