Michael Hall writes classic children's picture books that have meaning to generations of children. Punch is an adorable social-emotional story of an angry hedgehog who mistreats his friends. In return they haul back and give him a PUNCH (reach back and give him a glass of punch), two other friends give him a BELT and a SOCK (literally, a belt to hold up his pants, and socks to keep his feet warm), and in return badger gives a SMACK (a kiss).
This was such a sweet and funny way to show that we can help meet people's needs and thus change their behavior. Sometimes my own children are angry or hurtful, and the core reason for their behavior is they are hungry, or uncomfortable, or they need a hug. Instead of punishing, I try to take the time to listen to their problem and help them overcome the challenge.
Learning this at an early age helps children strengthen their muscles for being empathetic, intuitive, and good listeners. I highly recommend this sweet book for schools, therapists, and libraries.
