I have slowly made my way through all the books in this series and decided to review as a whole. These are amazing. Funny, smart with characters to love. They have made a believer out of me that PNR can be for me!!!
Like the storyline and the characters were all well written and complexity of it , even through there was a few times that Charlie got on my nerves.
Charley Davidson, our favorite grim reaper, is very pregnant and stuck on consecrated ground since twelve hellhounds would like nothing better than to tear her, and her unborn daughter, Beep, apart to stop a very old prophecy from coming to fruition. Needless to say, this is driving her crazy since she isn't used to being confined anywhere, at any time, and without coffee nonetheless! Luckily she has Cookie and Ubie's wedding to distract her, or you would think. If the PI can't go to the cases, the cases will come to the PI, so to speak.
I enjoyed this installment in the Charley Davidson series, but I think I like it better when Charley can get out and about and in trouble, truth be told. That being said, a lot of questions were answered, and I loved that. All in all, I liked way more about the book than I didn't, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to see where we will go next!
4/5 stars.
Stuck on the consecrated grounds of an old convent, Charley is going insane, but her team is with her. We finally get some answers to long asked questions, and tears were most definitely shed.
I really love the Charley Davidson books. Charley and friends are fun to read about. I love the audio books - Lorelie King does an amazing job bringing these characters to life. That being said, I think Eighth Grave After Dark is my least favorite of the entire series. Charley is stuck staying on Holy Ground so there isn't as much action in this book. There is a lot of talking and planning and being wary. Charley whines a lot. Cookie & Uncle Bob plan their wedding. We do learn a lot about characters like Mr. Wong and Osh and the Hell hounds and some more about Charley. I enjoyed the book, but not as much as the others in the series.
I could not get this version to download properly on any device I owned. I tried for about a month before I finally gave up.
I started this series and read the first 8 books back to back. I love this author and these characters. The world building and storyline are so good and well developed!
What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. The word building was phenomenal in this book. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.
Another great book in an awesome series. Charlie and the gang are back, for another round of entertaining fun. I love the world building in this series, the storytelling is fresh and entertaining. I would highly recommend this book.
Oh my goodness! With each book, I wonder where Darynda Jones will take the story and the ending of this book, blew my mind!!! I'm so eager to read the next one!
I just love this series! It’s got it all. Mystery and suspense with Charlie’s great sense of humor. Just when you think you have it figured out you are shocked all over again. This installment definitely had me shedding a few tears too. Highly recommend this series for a fun easy read!
I couldn't get through this. I think the material just was not interesting to me anymore. She is a good writer though.
I enjoyed this story. The story continues several months after the last book. Charley is safely tucked away and waiting for Beep to be born. All the same characters show up in this story as well. Working together for a common goal..... or are they? Twists and turns all around with a couple new ghosts in the mix and some old ones make an appearance. Definitely couldn't wait to pick up book 9 to find out what happened next
"Eighth Grave After Dark" was a pretty well done story. It's definitely a good bit more interesting than I expected after the let down of the seventh. I'm glad I gave this series a chance.
I love the whole series. I've read and listened to the series multiple times. Charley is appreciatively grumpy and snarky. I, too, have an appreciation for coffee and enchiladas. And sarcasm. (General Review for series books 1-12)
I requested all the books in the series when they were available, but decided not to continue past book 3. I will not be reviewing this book.
Things are heating up and changing in the 8th book in the Charley Davison series. Charley, Reyes, and their crew have been hiding out in a Covent as they await the birth of Charleys child...and hide from the 12 hellhounds who are after them.
Changes are coming....will they be ready?
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
Eighth Grave After Dark is the eighth book in the Charley Davidson series. This can be read as a standalone, though personally I think you should read the books in order written so you fully understand the storyline. There is violence and sex. I really enjoy this series. It is the perfect mix of paranormal and romance. Plus, you gotta love a gal who loves coffee as much as I do!
Eighth Grave after dark by Darynda Jones.
Charley Davidson has enough going on without having to worry about twelve hellhounds hot on her trail. She is, after all, incredibly pregnant and feeling like she could pop at any moment. But, just her luck, twelve deadly beasts from hell have chosen this time to escape onto our plane, and they've made Charley their target. And so she takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can't get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. Of course, if hellhounds aren't enough, Charley also has a new case to hold her attention: the decades-old murder of a newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows of the convent.
A fantastic read with some great characters. I love Charleys character. Hope there is more to come. 5*.
I had to take a short break between book 7 and this one. But the break didn't stop me from getting into Eighth Grave After Dark almost immediately. I was slightly thrown off by the time jump as all of the previous books are almost immediately one after the other. It's been eight months from where the last book left off. The time jump makes sense as the characters have been stuck on sacred ground for that time and it would be quite the boring book for them to never be able to leave for months. As it was, Eighth Grave After Dark does advance the overall storyline and Charley does have a mystery to solve (even from the safety of the convent). Yet it felt like not much was happening... probably due to the exact fact that Charley couldn't leave the convent.
I mentioned this before, but I love the pop culture references without name dropping. Name dropping always feels as if the author is trying too hard to be current, cool, or trendy. The way Darynda Jones does them is just right.
I've also mentioned this before, but I do get frustrated with the amount of information that's kept from Charley at times. She gets frustrated too. But since this has been going on for several books (or well...all of them) I'm a little beyond this being a plot tool.
I will also say that the alternate dimension pieces have increased and are getting so prevalent that I'm beginning to get a little frustrated. For some reason, this concept is something that I've always struggled with books. I hope that this doesn't cause me to lose interest in the series since I'm known to struggle with this type of thing.
Several things happened at the end of the book that has me excited about what's to come. Ultimately, Eighth Grave After Dark was probably my least favorite of the series so far. I still enjoyed it, but I certainly had more issues with this book than any of the prior ones. Eighth Grave After Dark gets 3.5 Stars. Have you read Eighth Grave After Dark? What did you think?
