Love this series and the characters. I recommend it all over the place. Thank you for the chance to read these books again and again.
Highly entertaining and a good go to comfort read. These are the books I like to come home to after a long day at work. Easy to slip into and do not require a lot from the reader. Charley Davidson is fun and quirky and gives me what I need in an easy read!
Charley still has twelve hounds after her and is hiding. But while hiding, she takes on a new mystery.
Eh, a good edition to the series. I like Charley for the most part but I'm starting feel like this craziness that is her is...at least for me getting real old real quick. As always the story arc moves along pretty decently in this 9th edition. Still you have to love Charley and crew as they go through the shenanigans Ms. Jones continuously puts them through.
Hidey-ho fellow SMPer! I'm just leaving a review that I don't want you to publish because I checked this book out via Netgalley and am trying to raise my score. I wish we could send ebooks from the MDL to our Kindle! Please don't post this publically haha! I didn't feel like it was honest to leave a review working for the company!
Love the Charley Davidson series!!
No matter how many times I read these books they make me giggle...I love that she is witty, kicks ass and talks to the dead
I'm going to write this review as a "series" review because, quite frankly, I binge read the whole series THIRTEEN books in one week. I literally couldn't put them down. When I read the last page of the last book, I wanted to cry.
Book one hooks you from the start. The world that Darynda built within this series is phenomenally creative. It's full of magic and mystery. The hero is the perfect anti-hero turned true hero that I've read in a long, long time. My heart broke for the trials and tribulations the hero and heroine went through to get to the end of the series. Calling it an emotional rollercoaster doesn't even cover the vast span of emotions that the author drags the reader through.
The only complaint I have is that the series ended.... there was a "the end" and I didn't want to be done yet. A complete must read for all PNR lovers!
Okay, first things first. Thanks to NetGalley for this...and the rest of this series--books 1-12, in case I have been neglectful in my appreciation for them.
Now, let's get to it. I'd taken a bit of a break in my marathoning of Charley and Reyes' story...yes, I have officially begun calling it their story in my head. Sue me. I'm pulling for a happy ending. Now we have a little bundle that's joined the party...sometimes kids can be a deal-breaker, but I think I understand why the author felt this was a "necessary evil".
This book read crazy fast...some of the others in the series seemed like they were a much longer read, but this one it seemed like I picked it up and was done with it in hardly no time at all. I'm not sure why, but it had a much better flow than the ones preceding it, even though I'm not so sure I really was on board with what transpired at the end. You guessed it...another cliffy. Gah, save me! I may have really thrown myself over the edge if I was waiting like everyone else when these originally were released. I was entertained enough and have to find myself contented with enough of the answers that were finally given in this installment to keep going in number nine... 3.5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this selection. This is book 8 in this series and while it did still make me giggle in certain parts, if I'm being honest, I am sort hating the people Charley has surrounded herself with. I also felt like this book was just sort of dragging along.
A re-read thanks to a promotion by Netgalley for the final Charley Davidson book. I love this series and so happy to have it in my e-reader instead of getting a loan from the library.
This one is not one of my favorites, but it is still a great addition to the series.
I miss single Charley.
That is what this all boils down to.
I am tired of hearing about how beautiful, her husband, the son of Satan, Rayes is.
I don't care any more. I.Dont.Care.
Then we wrapped it all up with a pretty (cliffhanger) bow at the end.
Why are you doing this to me Darynda? I thought we were friends.
I am going to continue on with the series. Part curiosity and part I requested these from NetGalley (thanks for the free copy in exchange for an honest review and all) and now I am committed.
Damn clicky fingers.

I love the humour. It's constantly making me laugh. But the ending broke my heart. While the characters are interesting enough that I want to keep reading, I'm starting to get really annoyed with Charley's friends and family. They don't trust her enough to tell her everything, even after so much has happened. But there is 2 main character points that are amazingly foreshadowed - Reyes and another person (who I won't name for fear of spoilers). The 2nd persons revelation was really gobsmacking and quite unexpected yet inevitable, because of the change in them. You wanted to believe the change but never quite trusted it, until you did, and the...
The story seems to have become too epic but the humour and witty banter is more than enough for me to forgive these faults and keep on reading.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed reading this. An interesting story with fun characters. Well written.
Eighth Gave After Dark is part of the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. I am still binge reading, and still recommend reading the series in order. Not only will it make the read more fun, but it is well worth the time.
With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums. Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine. While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life
Eighth Gave After Dark is more emotionally charged than some of the previous books, and all the threads are coming together. I like that the characters continue to stay true to what readers know about them, even as new revelations and complications continue to arise. I think that this is really a turning point in the series were the goofiness of Charley's personality stops being quite so entertaining, and things are consistently more serious and complicated. Charley is still funny, but the really amusing bits seem further apart and the intrigue and danger really ramp up. The series is still a very engaging read, but the charm that captured my attention really seems to have faded a bit. I know it returns in the next book, because I have read ahead, and that all the serious moments are needed for the larger story line. However, this is where the series lost some of its shine for me.
This is the eighth book in the Charley Series. Every time I think that Charley can not get in to more disastrous adventures, Ms. Jones proves me wrong. In Eighth Grave After Dark, Charley is almost at full term for her pregnancy, living with hubby Reyes, and other friends in an abandoned convent/sacred ground in order to save herself and Beep from the Hell-hounds. While there, Charley continues to stick her nose in Reyes' past while trying to help FBI Agents find a missing girl, and have her Uncle try and find her father's killer. There are a lot of issues between Charley and Reyes that threaten to disrupt their relationship. Will Charley be able to keep Beep safe, find the missing girl on time, find out who killed her father, keep Reyes from finding out that she's still snooping in to her past, and try to warn Reyes and the group that her father-in-law, Lucifer is no longer in Hell?
I highly enjoyed this book. I do feel that there are some repetition, but a girl can only get in to so much trouble without having it repeated! Ms. Jones continued to wow me and keep me reading past my bedtime! This does end on a major cliffhanger. I can not wait to see what happens next! Thank you Ms. Jones and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
I'd been flying through this series and enjoying every minute of it but then I hit book eight and just kind of stalled. It pains me to say it but I just didn't feel the magic with this one. To be fair it's very hard to write an exciting book when your narrator is not only 8 months pregnant but also trapped in a convent to avoid being eaten by hellhounds. Charley has spent months stuck in one location and as much as her friends and family drop by to keep her company it's just really not the same as seeing her out and about kicking butt and taking names.
I was a bit wary when we found out Charley was pregnant, to be honest I prefer to avoid kids in UF books unless they're either old enough to be interesting characters in their own right, or come at the end of the series to signify the the fact that the main characters are finally getting to settle down and have their well earned happily ever after. I mean how is Charley supposed to deal with a potential apocalypse if she's carting around a newborn? Well that issue was kind of resolved but I'm not even sure I like the way that side of things was handled either. It just seems a bit pointless to bring a kid into things and then do what happened in this book.
So this book wasn't as full of action as the previous stories and if I'm honest the first half was kind of boring. I was frustrated with Charley for going against Reyes' wishes and trying to track down his birth parents when he specifically asked her not to but I think I was even more angry at the way that entire plot thread ended and I wanted to smack some sense into the pair of them for keeping such ridiculously stupid secrets from each other. I was also really irritated by Gemma and the way she kept trying to force Charley to accept Denise, the stepmother from hell, back into her life. Denise has been horrible to Charley throughout the entire series, was a monster to her when she was a child and now expects to be allowed to play grandmother of the year. No chance and the fact Gemma was taking Denise's side made me really mad. I have to admit I loved the way things played out with Denise though, I think that probably makes me a terrible person but I don't care because the whole thing was hilarious!
The story did improve towards the end, we finally start getting some answers about Charley's powers and why she's been given them. I still have a lot of questions and some things confused me a bit but we're getting answers and that's great. I'm still not sure how I feel about the twist at the end though, in some ways I think it'll make things really interesting and will hopefully send the series back in the right direction action and plot wise but in others it felt like a bit of a cop out. I guess I'll have to see how it plays out in book nine before I make my mind up. Even though this wasn't my favourite book I'm still hooked enough that I want to know how things play out so I'm definitely going to be continuing the series.
Charley is sticking her nose in business that she was explicitly told not to. Am I surprised? No. But considering who Reyes is I think she should have just left it alone like she asked. It seems that the relationship between the two of them are becoming more sexual in nature and less trusting. Not quite sure how I feel about it. Lucifer is out of hell and on a mission. Charley finds out more on the prophecy and exactly why she is so special! I think given the circumstances I like the ending with Beep. At least for now. I really wish we had more of character relationship building so that we can connect with certain characters a lot better. Thank you to #NetGalley for allowing me to review this book. Onto the next one in the series!
This is a reissue of Charley Davidson series book 8. It was originally published in 2015. I always liked this series but it is beginning to get a little repetitive. Charley can only fight so many demons and have so many run ins with Reyes. She is hiding in an abandoned convent from the 12 hounds of hell. She is pregnant and ready to deliver any day. They discover a nun was murdered there many years ago and spend time finding out who killed her. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This series is always in high demand at my library. The characters Daryna Jones uses are delightful and my readers love getting to know them more each book. Fabulous series!
Eighth Grave After Dark wasn’t my favorite in the series so far. It really bothered me that Charlie would take and make so many careless actions and get into trouble again when it wasn’t her place and right after she had her baby. I don’t like that her and Reyes both continue to lie to one another when they are supposed to be a team. It also ended in a cliffhanger like all the others. Not my favorite. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.
Eight book could be renamed One Wedding, One Birth, Two Deaths And Bunch of Demons. :)
This time Charley can not be the private investigator and grim reaper extraordinaire, since she has a traveler with her, who makes her moving around difficult, but not so difficult that she could not do some hush dealings behind Reyes back, be matron of honor in Cookie’s wedding and solving two very old disappearance cases. Well true, the disappearances and murders just happen to be in the same convent that she was evacuated after the Twelve found them.
This is time the story is mostly paranormal, but the final revelation is such that Charley is enlighten, exhilarated and shattered. And I knew, that Mr. Woo was somebody important :).
Good quick story and now I finally understand, why Charley was clueless in the next installment.
