Holy heck!!! I just thought this series had been a wild ride but it is nothing compared to what this book is setting us up for. Wow! So many questions are answered and in the same turn there are more questions. This one has some explosive revelations and in one sweep we are neck deep in more mystery. This author is crazy wicked and the way her brain works kind of scares me. Lol! I’m not going to say more because I refuse to spoiler this for anyone. If you’ve read this far then you’re totally engaged as I am and I suggest you go into this one just as blind as I did. It makes the journey so much better, at least in my opinion. I will say it’s best to start this one when you can invest the most reading time to it because once you get past the first little bit, you are not going to want to stop.
P.S. Be prepared to want to jump immediately into book 9!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
BOOK BLURB
With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.
Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.
While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….
My Thoughts
8th book in and WOW what a rush!
As cases go the one involving the murdered nun was not supposed to be high risk for Charley, that plan went out the window fairly quickly.
The off-grounds case however was the one that tugged the hardest as it hit our PI close to home for many reasons.
There were surprises in store for Charley and her readers that absolutely rocked her world as she found herself in certain situations she never expected once again. 1 particular situation was as hilarious as it was serious and luckily it turned out well for all concerned. Along with which it also solved one of the cases the Charley was working on as a by-product.
The reveals come fast and furious just like the action in this 8th book. Taking place 8 months after we last last left Charley she is anxious to deliver her daughter and start over with Reyes in a different location that they have found which should keep all three of them safe from harm.
In the meantime however living in the abandoned convent on consecrated ground has become a prison sentence rather than the sanctuary the expecting couple were actually striving for.
Like previous books Ms. Davidson finds multiple opportunities to imperil herself. The least of which times were particular doozies even for Charley.
I again laughed, cried, shook my head, rolled my eyes and finally went along with the flow of information as it came fast and furious across the pages.
I will further add that long-time series fans and new readers alike should not miss this book, it was well worth the time spent with the gang of characters that are growing easier to keep up with as each new story dives deeper into their lives.
[EArc from Netgalley]
On every book read as soon as it is done and written up for review it is posted on Goodreads and Netgalley, once released then posted on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles as well.
I knew that the birth of the baby was going to be really dramatic, but I did not recognize how dramatic it was going to get. Definitely giving birth in the well is going to be pretty hard on anybody. However, it was handled with the normal panache.
Heart pounding, action packed and emotional adventure filled with danger, dark secrets, unexpected twists in the fight to save our world. Charley and the amazing circle of family/friends she has are in danger once again as they await the arrival of Beep! Loved every exciting moment and looking forward to what is next.
I must admit I love Charley's snarky comments and her fearlessness but this book was a sort of let down. The other books leading up to this one made you think a huge battle was coming along with the arrival of Beep. But there wasn't, it was just a showdown with no battle at all and the ending was just a head scratcher. Needless to say I will continue reading the series because I don't give up that easy.
This one was not so action centered as other books. But There is still a case! Even with Charlie pregnancy (she is soon due) she decided to help in finding a kidnapped girl. Will Charlie manage to help Her? Even when she has to stan at The house hounds?
Once again some very important thing is revealed but it's still not enough to sort out what will happen in the last book (as There are still 5 books to go).
The first part of The book is The calm one, but at some Point, I didn't know what was going on as a lot of things happened fast.
Even with slowing down The action its still Great addition to The Series
I loved all this series I absolutely can't wait to dive in the next one.I'm always looking forward to more of Charley ,Reyes and the rest of the gang. I highly recommend Darynda Jone Charley Davidson series
I've struggled through the first four in the Charley Davidson series, but I'm now raising the white flag of surrender. There must be something to these books, as there are a staggering number of positive reviews. Readers seem to be lapping these stories up like a cat to cream, so I don't blame the author for continuing to crank them out. However- I am done.
I'm done with Charley being stupidly gaga over Reyes. She loses her damn mind (and all her common sense) the second he looks her way. She has a high enough opinion of herself that I don't get why she'd allow herself to be treated the way he carries on. He says he loves her, but puts her in danger. Sure, he saves her, but what's a guy to do? Maybe not use his girlfriend as bait in the first place?
Their relationship seems immature, self-serving on both sides, and doomed to implode. Maybe this is the author's intention, watching them grow into a healthy relationship as the series moves along, but I'm not going to stick around for any more of the nonsense.
I love this series as a whole. Daryna Jones has perfected her storytelling to where all parts flow together flawlessly. Would recommend!
Beep has arrived! And in typical Charley fashion, all plans made for her arrival have been twisted, torn, tossed in the air and challenged – and you couldn’t want it any other way! Picking up eight months after Seventh Grave and No Body, Charley, Reyes and Osh have moved to an historic abandoned convent, on hallowed ground, to keep Charley and Beep safe from the hellhounds. While the early part of the book is relatively slow moving and without a ton of the frenetic action we’ve come to expect, the opportunity to breathe as the story unfolds will be a welcome, if not necessary one, in the grand scheme of things. With Charley having gone against Reyes’ wishes and hired her own PI to find his birth parents, Cookie and Ubie’s wedding – a perfect setting despite her step-monster Denise being omnipresent and desperate to ‘apologize’ for her mistreatment of Charley for her entire childhood, her father appearing to leave a warning, a departed nun appearing regularly and Charley’s FBI friend Kit asking for help with a missing teen, everything is pretty much normal, if quieter than the usual.
This won’t last long, however, as Charley notices Mr. Wong has relocated and is now in what they are using for a living room, the departed in her bedroom closet won’t speak – only wail, and there are increasing numbers of departed just standing about in the yard. And while the friction between Osh and Reyes is still there, they aren’t banging one another’s heads together, Reyes isn’t sleeping, and there are moments, frequent moments, when Reyes disappears and Charley can’t get him to explain who (or what) he is planning. With the countdown on Kit’s missing girl coming to a head, Cookie and Bob aren’t on their pre-honeymoon honeymoon but working instead, the people interested in, or a threat to Beep and Charley seem to be increasing exponentially. And then, when following Reyes, and the departed nun, things go left in spectacular, Charley-trademark fashion as a well, two bodies and Beep’s arrival all converge. Not expecting that Denise would step up and help Charley through labor, save Beep from strangulation and bring us to the point of meeting the child destined to be the downfall of Lucifer – just eighteen hours of stasis later and Charley is back to her old tricks, now with Beep in tow. Introducing her to her father, the door that won’t open revealing its secrets, a quick jump through hell to bring forth answers about a missing girl, a threat to Cookie and Amber, the return of the MC club and a showdown between Reyes and Charley that was overshadowed by a big bad – one determined to end Beep and give Charley nightmares about Denise for as long as she lives.
Strangely enough, it is Mr. Wong and the hellhounds, along with Osh and his knowledge of her name, her true name, that provides all the difference in this final battle (for this book) and sending Reyes into a tailspin as everyone has no idea just what, or where, Charley will turn next with the new information. Unfortunately, the battles for supremacy aren’t yet over with, and Beep is still threatened and must be protected, but the choices are truly heart wrenching, only the secret that Charley has held for weeks against the wishes of Reyes, could be the only answer. And when a previously departed returns and seems to be involved at the core of the battle, the story takes a twist that is utterly unexpected, and the addition of Reyes’ perspective as a sort of “epilogue’ has the benefit of giving us a few more steps along the path to the conclusion.
I received an eBook copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This entire book skipped eight months to the end of Charley’s pregnancy and because of this there was a lot of unanswered questions during that lost timeframe. And then the actual books timeline is a couple of days. It should really have been shorter and delved more into the characters other than Charley. I still feel that character development in these books are lacking. Also, after 8 books you would think that Charley would be more in tuned with her powers. I still don’t like the physical abuse done to the women in these books— especially when putting a chokehold on an 8 month pregnant woman. These are not men I look up to, not do I find attractive. Seek therapy and get yourself together. Also, Charley’s Dad has calcified from lack of development— he’s said the same 2 lines in the last 2-3 books: ‘Charley, I never knew. You are so important.’— good ‘ol Dad never expounded on his feelings towards Charley, or why he let her stepmother damage a ‘special’ kid. His Incongruous mindset and guilt are one dimensional and there needs to be more history shared in these many novels. Everything comes across flat.
And leaving us with an amnesia ending?? For real? Did a CW writer get ahold of the keyboard during the writing process? Just no.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Another action packed fast paced story from Darynda Jones. As always it had me sucked in from the beginning even if it started a bit slow. It was worth catching up on things and finding out what Charley and Reyes have been up to!
I feel like the entire Charley Davidson series is one big gif of that Simpson's character going 'ha ha!' because haha wow nothing is straight forward ever. And it looks like Jones has just set up something of a reset though lord even knows what that will look like or how long that'll last.
Charley was a little less annoying in this one but honestly I don't know how anyone can root for this relationship. They just constantly lie and hide things from each other and sure the binge isn't helping but can Jones seriously not mix things up a little? Why is Reyes always looking up at someone through his eyelashes? Stg I'm so over authors who reuse the same turn of phrase for a character. It reminds me of Maas and all her mates, mating, and vulgar gestures. Do. Something. Different.
Anyway, whatever, I'll read on.. probably when the final book is out because yeah I need a break (and so does everyone who gets my updates in their feed) but also I just need to know how it all ends. I need to know Charley grows tf up. I need to know her relationship can evolve into something normal and healthy. And I just need closure. But for now.. peace out.
This is such a great series. This is the eighth book in the Charley Davidson series. The main character is the Grim Reaper and she's got a great sense of humor.
I received a free copy of EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK (Charley Davidson Book 8) by Darynda Jones through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. In this installment, Charley, private investigator and grim reaper, is in seclusion at a convent. Not really in seclusion; she’s just hiding out until she gives birth. Then, she and her husband plan to jet off to a consecrated island that used to be a leper colony. They should be safe there, right? In the meantime, why is there a tax attorney crying in the closet? Why is there a nun trying to lead Charley into the wilderness? Where is FBI agent Kit Carson’s ex-husband’s niece? Will Cookie and Ubie ever get to their honeymoon? What is Charley’s step-monster up to?
Oh well, just another day in the life of the shining beacon of death. I highly recommend this series to mature readers who don’t mind occasional bad language and who either enjoy reading or don’t mind skipping sexy-times.
Another action packed fast paced story from Darynda Jones. As always it had me hooked from the beginning - this series goes from strength to strength .
Charlie and Reyes are living on consecrated ground ………… she is ready to pop 'Beep' out at any moment .
Unable to leave the grounds , currently being circled by 12 hellhounds , she is going stir crazy ……. as is Reyes , he hasn't slept for 8 months . Cookies' wedding to Uncle Bob has at least given her something else to think about ………… but she can't resist the thought of another PI case …….. if she can't find one , one will surely find her .
Trips to Hell , trying to find her Dad's killer , talking to the dead and not least naming her body parts and Reyes shower make for a great fun read . Spies abound on both sides …. who is reporting to whom ?
The final chapter of this book left me craving the next book …………… what a twist ………….. what sadness , my heart just broke - as did Charley !.
I find this series addictive and have already bought or pre-ordered all the other books .
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
reading through this series in order has been fun. I'm loving Charley and her antics and sarcasm.
The author still does too much recapping for those that have read earlier books...so if you haven't started yet you could possibly jump in here, but you won't get the full affect of some of the actions and decisions.
Yet another amazing story to add to the series. I just love the characters and the world that has been created. The character development and relationship buildings have been great throughout. This is a 'must read' for sure!!!
So good! I love this series and this book was awesome! It's zany and has it's dark moments that pull you in. I couldn't put it down!
A big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I read this a long time ago and re-read it when the opportunity arose. It is still a great read and this is a fun, inventive series. Some crazy stuff happens in this book!!! But as usual Charley comes through. Stepmother is crazy! Great read would recommend to anyone over 21! Enjoy I rate this a 4.5
