Eighth Grave After Dark is a highly emotional ride in the Charley Davidson series. Many of the things that were a given became twisted and dumped on their head. Charley finally gives birth to Beep, Cookie marries Ubie, and everyone is keeping secrets in a highly volatile environment. Charley even manages to solve cases while holed up on holy ground. Action packed and slightly traumatic, Eighth Grave kept me up reading way past my bedtime for another thrilling read from Mrs. Jones that just deepens my addiction to Charley Davidson's stories. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
I’m binge reading this books and I’m in love with this series. It’s wonderful.
You must read it if you love urban fantasy and humorous books
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for this ARC
Charley Davidson and her hotter than hellfire new husband, Reyes, are living in an abandoned convent in order to keep Charley and her unborn baby, Beep, safe. As if Charley doesn't already have enough on her plate with Lucifer, the Twelve, and countless others trying to kill her, a friend asks for help in a missing person's case. Being the good friend Charley is, she cannot refuse. On the upside, maybe all of this will take her mind off everything else.
Although Charley has been forbidden to leave the grounds of the convent, she can still get things done. With the help of an investigator and some good friends, Charley manages not only to solve the case she's working on. As an added bonus, Charley is able to help a murdered nun living on the grounds as well. Back to matters at hand... she must discover what the significance of the Twelve is. Beep must be protected at all costs.
I give author Darynda Jones's EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK a 3.5 star rating. I feel like this book and several others in the series are just running on too long, and Charley is not getting much of anywhere. I know she's stubborn and easily distracted, but come on! I pushed through the first half and was glad I did. It really picks up in the last half of the book. Charley finally gets back to where she needs to be. A lot happens in the end of EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK... and what a cliffhanger! I look forward to reading the next book, THE DIRT ON NINTH GRAVE.
Love the Charley Daniels series; Jones continues to write engaging plots and great characters. I always look forward to the next installment!
I enjoyed this story a lot. If you've read the previous books in the series you know that when it comes to danger Charley is all up in it and even though she is pregnant Beep does not hinder her detective work. This books has its sweet, funny, dreadful, happy, heartfelt and heart breaking moments. My heart broke for Charley at the end when she had to make one of the hardest decisions she has ever made. It truly broke her. There's danger inside and outside of the house, spies within the circle, enemies become protectors and friends and/or family become enemies. This story seems to bring everything back to the person that caused the most damage to Reyes and his father is not going down with a fight. I can't wait to read the next book in this series to see how things turn out with Charley.
oh NO, NO, NO, NOOOOOO! I didn't expect everything to happen this quickly already! The ending! I get scared when authors do what Darynda did for Charley at the end, especially for a main character. I'm not going to say what, you'll have to read to find out.
Charlie and Reyes adventures just keep going on and going on the story is still engaging and great the cover is bomb and I'm still binging onto book 9
Charley's bun is cooking and Charley's stuck on hallowed ground. Which is a good thing because the baby needs to be kept safe, but Charley's hyperactive personality has a hard time with the confinement. Which basically means she finds ways to stick her nose in things even from the convent.
MEANWHILE, Reyes is being shifty, her ghostly friends might not be as friendly as Charley thinks, and there's a wedding to get off the ground. Metaphorically speaking.
Charley's confinement does keep her from doing some of the insane things she's managed to accomplish in previous books. No, wait. She still takes crazy risks. The woman has no sense of self-preservation. Beep does temper her SOMEWHAT, but not all that much when all is said and done. Which doesn't mean she doesn't love her baby to pieces. She's just hardwired to help people who need it.
That ending pretty much means I need to start book 9 immediately. Which is totally doable. Because THINGS HAPPEN and I'd like to know how things are going to work out.
Loved this book! There were so many twists and surprises I did not see coming! The end was a real cliff-hanger and I can't wait for the next book! I have to find out what happens next!
This is the eight book is this series and it just keeps getting better. In this book you learn more about the characters past. And wonderful surprises await
I love this series by Darynda Jones, and it's one that is a must have, especially if you love a snarky, kick ass heroine! Any book series worth it's salt has to have one of those, as well as a sexy man who walks into your wildest fantasties/dreams! Very well written, and a series worth reading over and over!
Four and a half stars: A game changer that will leave you clamoring for more.
For the last eight months, Charley and Reyes have been cooped up in an abandoned convent, anxiously awaiting the arrival of their daughter, affectionately dubbed "Beep". They were forced onto holy grounds in order to escape the hellhounds who are hell bent on killing Charley, Reyes and Beep. Even though she is cooped up, Charley still manages to find a way to get into trouble while attempting to solve ghostly mysteries. This time around, she is looking for answers regarding her father, a murdered nun, and a kidnapped girl before time runs out, all while being very pregnant. Not to mention, she is also helping out with a wedding. The question is what will happen to Charley once Beep arrives?
What I Liked:
*Eighth Grave is a game changing book. I thought this was one of the best installments to date. It is packed full of startling developments that will alter the course of the series as well as plenty of long awaited answers. You can also expect lots of humor and Charley Davidson antics along with a wedding, birth and shocking finale that will leave you screaming for the next book. Why must I wait until 2016?
*There is so much going on in this book, and I loved that there was never a dull moment. It starts out fast and furious with a wedding. I was a bit surprised by the wedding, but thrilled none the less. So much happens that it is hard to explain. If you are a long time fan of the series, you will be thrilled to know that you get many of the answers you have long awaited. I loved that I had a better understanding of Charley and her powers as well as Reyes and his father's ultimate plan. At last, I even learned Mr. Wong's secrets. I always knew I loved that guy. This one is packed full of stunning twists and developments that will change Charley and the path of the series from here on out. This is the game changer, an must read for all Charley Davidson fans.
*The secondary characters really shine in this book. I enjoyed the big focus on the relationships that Charley has formed over the last eight books. All the characters that made a big impact on Charley are here. I was especially delighted by the return of a couple of characters. There is so much love and growth with many of the important relationships in Charley's life. I really liked the focus on friends and family in this book.
*Ms. Jones knows how to hook a reader, and she once again pulls it off brilliantly with this book. She delivers many of the answers to long awaited questions, and then she pulls the rug right out from under you with some shocking revelations. I don't know how things will play out from here, but I am sure it will be brilliant. The last chapters were stunning. You have to read this.
*I have both read and listened to books in this series, and I am sold on the audiobooks. The wonderfully talented Lorelei King narrates the audiobooks, and I think she is brilliant. Ms. King absolutely brings Charley to life, and I enjoy the series so much more when I listen to it vs. reading. If you haven't yet tried something narrated by Lorelei King, do so. She is fantastic. I also loved that at the end of the audiobook, there was a brief interview between Lorelei King and Darynda Jones. Definitely worth listening to.
And The Not So Much:
*Without giving too much away, I was a bit sad with the way things played out between Charley and her stepmom, Denise. I was liking the direction that things were taking, and then to have it all stamped out, was a bit crushing.
*I thought both the secondary mysteries, the kidnapped girl and the murdered nun felt a bit like throwaway storylines. I liked them both, but they weren't a big focus, and once the answers were found, they were forgotten. I was expecting a bit more resolution with both subplots.
*I loved the wedding, and I was honestly a bit surprised that it was already happening considering how slow the romance was. I was left wanting more. What about the honeymoon and the issues surrounding it?
Eight Grave After Dark was for me one of the best books to date in the ever popular Charley Davidson Series. This is the book that changes everything as there are some stunning developments, lots of answers and new startling questions. If you are a long time fan of the series, this is a must read. I am extremely anxious for the ninth book which has been pushed to release in 2016. I can't wait to see how things will fare for our favorite characters. Write faster, Darynda Jones. In the meantime, if you haven't read this series or you have fallen behind, now is the time to catch up. Grab the audio versions and settle in!
I purchased an audiobook copy. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.
