This is the first book in this series that I have read, but it won't be the last. From the very first pages when we learn that two young women have gone missing while hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail called the Hundred Mile Wilderness in Maine, it is nearly impossible to put down this excellent mystery. The descriptions of the wilderness areas are so finely drawn, it is almost as though readers are seeing the world through Game Warden Mike Bowditch's eyes. Doiron's characters have depth and complicated back stories, yet readers like me who are new to the series will in no way feel lost.

The plot of The Precipice is propulsive, but slow down as you read it to appreciate the fierce beauty of the landscape.
