This is the first book in an exciting new trilogy. It has a fast-paced story that hooks the reader in. From the very first page you are invested in the story. I would recommend this book.
Alive by Scott Sigler
Alive is the kind of book I recommend going into blind. Don't even read the back cover synopsis on this book, because it's better if you have no idea what's about to happen. And, trust me, you will not know what's going on until the end! I found Alive to be quite a page-turner, and I don't want to give too much away for fear of spoiling the reading experience. It's an action-packed, dark dystopia, with a strong heroine that readers will pull for. It was a bit long for the story it told, but I enjoyed it and think teens at the library will like this exciting adventure!

It is an unusual premise. A girl wakes up on what she believes is her 12th birthday. To her horror, she finds herself in a coffin. After breaking out, she hears another girl waking up too. They have different symbols in their foreheads. It is clear that they are older than 12. Their clothes are too small as if they had grown in the coffins. The two of them help the others get out of their coffins and they go looking for food and water.
They are in a type of building full of hallways. In other the rooms, they find more coffins or piles of bones. Loud marching alerts them to other survivors. The two groups merge into one and select a leader. The survivors are known as the Birthday Children. They have a scepter covered in jewels, a spear, and a knife and must use them to escape. They go looking for a way out and find monsters.
This is the first book I have ever read by this author and the first in the Generations Trilogy. If you like dystopian novels like Lord of the Flies, Divergent, and the Hunger Games, you will enjoy this book. It is definitely a story of survival.
Looked promising, was interesting to read, fast-paced with a feel of The Maze Runner, good twists. Definitely an interesting and refreshing story. Great for anyone that loves YA dystopian books.
I read about 75% of it but I had to put it down. I couldn't get into the story and none of the characters were particularly interesting.
I couldn't stop reading this book.
Granted, that doesn't mean that I didn't put it down when I got too creeped out (deliciously creeped out!).
Em wakes up on her twelfth birthday only to realize she's trapped, her body is different and her memories are gong. She's an intensely driven girl/woman(?) that is fiercely protective, yet her last name says it all (nope, won't give any spoilers. I refuse to do that in general, but in this case, the author asks all reviewers to not include any! awesome!).
Her struggles to survive, to find answers to question upon question and move forward with solutions in an unknown environment just proves this girl refuses to quit, no matter what.
I can't recommend this highly enough. It's been a long time since I was freaked out by a book (and again, in a GOOD WAY) so I was incredibly happy to receive this galley. It reminds me a lot of Lord of the Flies in year 2050!
My thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Del Rey Spectra for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
Meh. It was ok. I only read 24% of it and while it was interesting, I wanted to know where it went and to see if it was worth reading the other books and the rest of this one. I read the summaries of the other two and reviews of all three and decided this wasn't a book or trilogy that I had to finish.
Not bad, the premise is interesting, but it moved a little slowly and it goes in some weird places, as per the summaries and reviews. 2 stars means it was ok and what I read of it was ok. There are some twists, so if you want to be surprised, don't read the reviews or summaries of the others. Again, not bad, but not quite for me. Again, not bad, but not quite for me. I could see it working for many who enjoy reading YA, it has interesting elements. It just didn't grab me at this time.
This isn't the usual type of book i read. It's fairly well written, just very sci-fi. Looking at it from a purely writing perspective, the pacing is fairly solid, the characters accessible. Characterization is decent if not terribly complex. And maybe its just me but I didn't find the plot overly surprising.
