I was given an advance copy of this book by netgallery in exchange for a honest review.
Second chance at romance? Why yes, who doesn't love reading books like this! Coming from a small town, I enjoyed this cute story of a sweet romance mixed with a ghost story. Great first book to a series!
Since I had already read the third book in this series, That Man of Mine , not knowing it was a part of a series, this book gave me the background I was missing on characters I've already met.
We are introduced to Allie and her brother, Zeke and his family, as well as her lost love, Tom and his son and ex-wife, Lauren. We learn about their childhood and Allie and Zeke's mom and Buela who raised them. Allie now lives in Tampa and is searching for her big journalism break so she can get a permanent position with the magazine, Florida!. She is chasing a ghost story at the senior center that is slated to be torn down in her hometown and this is the premise for the story. The man in charge of the project is none other than her first love, Tom, who broke her heart twelve years before. There were many intense moments between them with neither wanting to go back and relive their short romance that defined how they both look at love but the chemistry is still there and they don't always fight their attraction. Tom is now divorced and living back in Whispering Bay after following his ex-wife and their son there when they relocated to be closer to her family. We see the family dynamics between them as well as between Zeke, the Chief of Police, and his wife, Mimi, and their two kids. Claire, their teenage daughter, who is sixteen has been sneaking around and Allie is in the thick of it along with Tom. Allie seems to get herself in one scrape after another many involving the police.
There is long lost love along with strange music being heard, the smell of lemons or Jean Nate perfume, a seance, anxiety, angst, tears, fear, disobedience, lies, laughter, happiness, arguments and love. Zeke and Mimi are having marital problems which upsets Allie and she fears the loss of her family as she knows it if they get divorced. We also learn of her four life goals and how they define her life. Her conversations with her roommate Jen back in Tampa seems out of place for the most part especially when they involve Jen's boyfriend, Sean. The citizens of Whispering Bay are an eclectic group with a group of ghost hunters, The Sunshine Ghost Society, and Mimi's friends, the Bunco Babes, at its core. With a lot of twists and turns we finally get closure and a happily ever after and most but not all of the loose ends are tied up. I look forward to reading book two in the series, Then He Kissed Me .
Geraci is a new to me author only having read books one and three in the Whispering Bay Romance series. I look forward to reading her other books that will be added to my always growing TBR pile.
Favorite Quote: The trick was to somehow turn this "haunted" house thing into a credible story that would sell magazines and keep her journalistic integrity intact. She sighed and burrowed further under the covers. She'd need her sleep to deal with whatever happened tomorrow.
