"It was the summer everything changed...."
My Sunshine Away unfolds in a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom. But in the summer of 1989, when fifteen-year-old Lindy Simpson--free spirit, track star, and belle of the block--experiences a horrible crime late one evening near her home, it becomes apparent that this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia has a dark side, too.
I hard a real hard time connecting to this story. It had such promise, too - the blurb sounded really interesting and got me to the first page...
But this seems to be far less about what happened 20 years ago than being more about a creepy adult reminiscing on a past crush. It was somewhat uncomfortable reading some of the passages - just unnecessary dwelling on the hormones of a teenager.
Also, there seemed to be far too many distractions to other events of the period - which is great, but there was so many, it kinda just blanked out any interest the story had been developing.
A shame about this one - I thought it was gonna be really good...
