Not what I expected.
This book was well written if a little tedious, but I found the subject matter - a lot of Mormon history - quite lacking in interest for me. I received a copy of the book because I loved the idea of 'A Rare Book Mystery' - perhaps I should have read one of the other books in the series, and the review would have been more positive.
This is number three of this series. I reviewed number 2 in May 2015. At the time I enjoyed that book's jauntiness and style. My main criticism was that the female characters were thin.
Mr. Shawver has done a good job with the women in this book, but the book itself did not please me very much. Maybe it's because I have a horror of burnt libraries (never could enjoy Gormenghast for just that reason) but more likely because it seems awfully stodgy. Everyone gets married and the supernatural is banished. Yawn.
I received a review copy of "The Widow's Son: A Rare Book Mystery" by Thomas Shawver (Random House – Alibi) through NetGalley.com.
