Was torn on even giving this two stars because there was so much I didn’t like and almost DNFed it many times but the first half was so good I thought the bad parts may get better. But they did not. I never read reviews before I read a book myself because I like to go in blind with no preconceived notions or biased opinions on anything, but for some reason I just expected more, and read many reviews after I finished that I agreed with. Here’s what made it 2 stars: human trafficking and physical violence against her excused by the male lead and forgiven by the lead female character. Strike 1. There were scenes depicting sexual discussions and sexual acts when the female lead was 12 years old. Ick. Strike 2. I wasn’t going to comment on edits because this book was gifted to me for review back before publication and I’d hoped all of the dialogue, references, and descriptions of places that were in British English when the characters were all based in the US in Florida would have been corrected in edits. They were not. Strike3. It had good potential in the start but it just didn’t hit the mark. Will not be reading part 2, which wouldn’t have been needed had this one not dragged on and left so many unnecessary loose ends.
Pepper Winters can do no wrong when it comes to her dark romances and here we are with a captive romance that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.
Be ready for all the emotions and instant connection between these two. There's definitely a familiarity between these two that leave you with questions. You'll definitely have your hunches, but I couldn't wait to see what was to come.
Absolutely addicting read and can't wait to dive into the next one!
