THE DAUGHTER OF AN EARL is reminiscent to me of historicals written by Lisa Kleypas and Sabrina York with strong female characters and some men that don't know what to do with all their woman's strength! A fast paced read with lots of adventures and heartache along with passion, intrigue and suspense.

Morgan's THE DAUGHTER OF AN EARL has complex characters that we get to know a bit at a time. All have their secrets and only seem to share them on a need to know basis. Lady Emily and Brett, an American businessman, are front and center and have a great deal of chemistry that neither knows what to do with. Both have been hurt in the past and are afraid not only to love again but to ever marry. When they are together the sparks fly no matter how much they try to hide it from themselves or from those around them. Her sister, Julia, and Julia's husband, Daniel, are always in the mix as well since Daniel is a school friend of Brett's and they had been in business together. Drummond, a friend and co-worker of Emily's deceased fiancée, was an antagonist that had very little to be liked about him or to redeem him. His personality was weasly and he always felt superior to others and especially to women. He liked to manipulate situations and always felt he couldn't get caught. Watching the story unfold touched on a lot of emotions. There was a back story that was alluded to throughout and enough information was provided that I didn't feel at a loss not having read the first book that introduces us to the Chandler family - Emily, Julia, their brother and father amongst others. There was illness, despair, horror, fear, tears, sadness, happiness, laughter, lots of social activities and engagements, staff, servants, businesses to run, family and friends, lots of loving and love along with the mystery to be solved. There was nice closure and a happily ever after. I hope the story continues since Brett has two sisters that matches need to be made for as well as Brett's cousin who is out chasing his love.

Morgan is a new to me author and I will be adding her other books to my always growing TBR pile. THE HEART OF A DUKE appears to be a connected story with Lady Emily's sister, Lady Julia, front and center and takes place before THE DAUGHTER OF AN EARL.

Brett Curtis is in England to find his cousin who has disappeared since acquiring his title. But as the reader finds out there are more secrets to uncover. On this quest he is slowed down by his sisters who are eager to partake in Ton society. When Lady Emily takes them underhand he is a little poorer as a result, but the girls do seem much happier as they busy themselves getting ready for balls and shopping sprees. Lady Emily fascinates him and when she requests his help he finds himself personally and emotionally involved. As the investigation progresses Brett’s reputation becomes tarnished. Will he find his cousin, help Emily and be able to win her love and hand in marriage, as well as come out of the scandal unscathed?

Lady Emily Chandler is just emerging from a deep depression which occurred after her fiancé died of questionable means. She was so depressed that she actually believed she was insane and thus does not think she is marriage material. When she learns that there was a possibility that her fiancé was murdered she becomes determined that she will clear his name. Enter Brett, an American who stirs feelings in Emily that she thought she would never feel again. She uses cunning to get him to help her but the closer they get to finding out the truth she realizes that she loves Brett and does not want to put his company or his name in danger. Besides she feels she can’t marry him anyway.

Victoria Morgan makes the characters come alive and the flow, intrigue and suspense keep the reader turning pages. I could see many more books on the secondary characters. I look forward to more Victoria Morgan stories and as I was so impressed with this story I went out and purchased The Heart of a Duke..

I requested this one back in the day as I had every intention of reading it. However, its been years and I still haven't gotten around to it and while I feel guilty at not reviewing a book I think that I need to admit to myself that I won't be reading this one anytime soon....if at all.
