I did not enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. I loved its premise, but I found it hard to immerse myself in the story. I also could not relate to the characters, which made it even harder.
This is a very fast read that I think a lot of theater loving kids would gobble up--it's a little bit like Better Nate Than Ever in its frenetic speed and big eyed kid meets the city and is enchanted with all things New York kind of way. I found Justin to be completely selfish and never learning from his mistakes, which for me was a real downer. I didn't root for him.
Justin is a teen guy who LOVES Broadway theater. He loves it so much that when the chance comes by to do an internship for high school, he applies to be an intern at a Broadway actors agency. But when he goes to The Phantom of The Opera with his boyfriend spencer one night, everything changes in terms of his internship at the agency. Just in the seat before Justin sits a famous actor, Chase Hudson,( with his assistant Hubert), a tv star who is planned to be in a Broadway play very soon. That night, he gets the chance of , instead at interning at the agency, interning for Chase! Wow, interning for a real Broadway star! Soon Justin will be in a REAL theatre interning, and maybe all the theater people that will be around him will recognize him as a talent and offer him a contract right away...Justin hopes for..
But soon enough he finds out that interning for Chase and Hubert meens nothing more or less then running errands for them. Picking up a furniture item at store x, get coffee for Chase, go to the vet on Long Island with Chase's dog and more of that kind of stuff. He also finds out very soon that he is doing the stuff that Hubert is suppose to do for Chase, so who's intern is he anway? And later on, Justin is send a few mysterious envelopes with even more mysterious notes, which certainly is pointed at Chase or Hubert.
Beside his internship he has his hands full of other things: his cranky grandma, he lives at her house during his stay in New York, and she has a very peculiar and weird opinion (and rules) about everything. And he told his boyfriend Spencer they need a time out. Spencer keeps appearing in his live though as he is interning at an online fashion magazine with their mutual friend Becky.and he tries to help Chase come to his senses regarding his career. There's a lot of stuff going on here--with anonymous warning notes, secret relationships, and Justin's realization that he is annoying self-centered and not the best friend someone might need
The story has a bit of everything. Centered around precocious Justin (self-proclaimed as the best actor in his school), The Rise and Fall of A Theater Geek is hilarious, mysterious and inspiring. Imagine a 16 year old attempting to take Broadway by storm, perhaps solving the mystery of a peculiar collection events and attempting to save the next big flop along the way? That's Justin... AND, how could he not learn about love and friendship in the process?
I really liked Justin, he was a bit akward sometimes and he has a bit too much expectations of his own talent on stage. You get to see his entire thought process, when he gets distracted and all the little comments he makes in his mind about people and events. It really made him come to life. He is an extremely enthusiastic broadway fan and his passion was evident. Sometimes his train of thought could get a little intense but that certainly wasn’t a bad thing.
If you are interested in Broadway, a fun main character, three awesome friends andNew York- all presented with authentic ''Justin'' comments and hilarious observations, then I think you will enjoy this book!
Couldn't finish. I couldn't connect with the characters.
