Lexi Shaw is a senior in high school who is literally faking being perfect so she could hang out with the "cool kids" and be associated with being perfect. Meanwhile her life is anything but perfect, as life with her alcoholic and inattentive mother is a challenge. Luckily her best friend, Nolan, and his family are there to support her.
As teenage girls do, Lexi keeps a secret relationship with the bad boy drug dealer, Tyler. She enjoys their physical relationship, but makes him agree to maintain his distance so she can retain her perfect reputation.
As the story progresses, Lexi gets the chance for something she'd always thought she wanted, but quickly learns that it was not what she wanted. Lexi learns more about her life and herself throughout the book. Overall, it was a decent read, though I wish I knew more about Tyler.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
Lexi Shaw is a teenage girl who seems to have everything under control from the outside. She is popular in school, but her school life is the complete opposite from her life at home. Her mother is an alcoholic and has never taken care of Lexi very well. She is mostly absent, going out with the wrong kind of men. Lexi has some kind of a family life though with her best friend Ben, where she was mostly during her childhood and is still always welcomed by him and his parents. With her crush on her signature good boy best friend, Ben, she wants him to never find out what she's done with Tyler. The apple falls not far from the three though because Lexi starts dating Tyler, a guy who has the reputation of being a bad guy. Lexi's father has been absent most of her life, she always was told by her mom he isn't alive anymore, but then she gets to hear that he is still alive and starts to search for him, which leads to their actual real life meeting and where she finds out he isn't a drug addict anymore for many years and he build a new family, but why without her?
I liked this book a lot. Lexi was a very likeable main character. The plot was not the most original, but it was exciting and written very well. I really liked the romance between Lexi and Tyler. Altough Tyler was branded as a bad boy, he was the good and righ guy for Lexi. What also was very touching was the reunion between Lexi and her father, and how with this she got a new family life agan. I truly recommend reading Faking Perfect for a light YA read!
(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)
When Lexi Shaw seduced Oakfield High's resident bad boy Tyler Flynn at the beginning of senior year, he seemed perfectly okay with her rules:
1. Avoid her at school.
2. Keep his mouth shut about what they do together.
3. Never tease her about her friend (and unrequited crush) Ben.
Because with his integrity and values and golden boy looks, Ben can never find out about what she’s been doing behind closed doors with Tyler. Or that her mom’s too busy drinking and chasing losers to pay the bills. Or that Lexi’s dad hasn’t been a part of her life for the last thirteen years. But with Tyler suddenly breaking the rules, Ben asking her out, and her dad back in the picture, how long will she be able to go on faking perfect?
*2.5 stars*
The thing that disappointed me about this story were the characters. It pretty much got me interested with the blurb but then let me down with the more important things.
I really was expecting more in the way of "romance" but it really did sit in the background, even though Lexi was juggling two boys - it never really got past second gear. Which would have been fine if the plot was strong enough to carry it - but, for me, it just didn't get to be more than a highschool love triangle. And who hasn't read that before?
Was hoping for far more...
