THE HIGHWAYMAN - Kerrigan Byrne

INTENSE CHARACTERS - 4 stars

Plot - 4 stars - We first meet Dougan and Farah when they are children in an orphanage. They are devoted to each other, so much so that they decide to marry, just the two of them reciting their vows to each other. Fast forward to years later when Farah works at Scotland Yard and Dorian Blackwell, notorious criminal, is brought in. When Dorian kidnaps Farah, they become closer, working together to get her inheritance back.

Writing - 4 stars - Byrne caught my attention right from the beginning. With the brief look at their youthful years, she was able to build a strong basis for some interesting and compelling characters. Their actions as adults...and most notably their interactions with each other...allow the reader to get into their heads and definitely root for their success. The story moves along quickly, and I was fascinated by the look into investigations and lives in this time period.

Characters - 4 stars - We get to know Farah as an adult, a "widow" working at Scotland Yard as a clerk. She has built a nice life, although she's open to marriage and children, and is developing a nice friendship with her boss. Enter Dorian, scary and intimidating criminal, with lots of secrets. But Farah has an inexplicable fascination with him. There is some question about his identity, and we follow along with her as she discovers more about him. He's oddly appealing despite his flaws, probably because he's completely self-deprecating, almost too much so.

Title - 4 stars - Dougan, as a child, suggested to Farah that he would become a highwayman when he grew older. She's spent her whole life loving him and wondering about him. She seems to be attracted to a dangerous type of man, despite her better judgment, much like this title suggests.

Cover - 4 stars - This is a beautiful cover. The bright color, the scene, all make a lovely picture that puts the reader in the mood for a strong and sexy story.

Overview - 4 stars - This story is intense and strong, based on two characters who grip the reader's attention and don't let go. There's a fascination about them as they develop their relationship, working together, then splitting up, fighting their attraction to each other. The plot isn't particularly exciting, although it kept moving. The joy of this story is in the characters and their thoughts and attitudes.
