This is a book I have recommended multiple times and mentioned in my Forbes Careers column -- quoted below:
To manage your professional relationships: Friend & Foe by Adam Galinsky and Maurice E. Schweitzer
The subtitle of this book, “When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both,” is a perfect summary of the content. This is a nuanced, insightful read into how professional relationships can thrive with both competition and cooperation. The book also looks at management’s role in encouraging the right mix of competition and cooperation, as well as special considerations for women and minorities
Many of us inherently project either warmth or competence. But if we want to build strong relationships, we need to project both. – Adam Galinsky and Maurice E. Schweitzer, Friend Or Foe
As a recruiter/ career coach, I constantly get the question about who should give out the first number in a salary negotiation. Friend Or Foe actually covers this and gives a balanced argument that it depends on the situation. Salary negotiation is just one example that the book covers in the competition/ cooperation framework but it’s an excellent example of how balanced the book is, giving you food-for-thought and options to customize based on your individual situation.
