In his book, Preaching: Communicating Faith in the Age of Skepticism, Pastor Tim Keller explains why expository preaching is crucial for a biblical church today. Keller begins by examining the elements that define expository preaching and by explaining the importance of staying true to the text being taught. He says preaching should never be boring and engage the culture in which we live. Preaching must bring the audience to Christ and His gospel, Jesus, Keller argues should the central point of every sermon preached. To illustrate the point further, Keller closes the book by explaining the step-by-step process of how to prepare to exposit from the pulpit.

Preaching is an informative, enlightening, and accessible volume. Pastor Keller has a gift to communicate complex and important principles in an understandable way. He has a brilliant intellectual mind that allows him to grasp varied amounts of knowledge and distill them down to basic concepts. The book is well-written and well-rounded. I do have some disagreements over his philosophy of ministry and his over-emphasis of engaging the culture. The reader should be aware that Preaching was written before Critical Race Theory became prevalent in the evangelical church, or Keller’s leftward drift. All in all, Preaching is instructive, equipping, and enlightening as it demonstrates how Scripture-centered communication from the pulpit informs the mind and reaches the heart.
