There are many things I enjoyed about this book, and also some things I didn't. I liked the overall premise and I liked getting to know the various women within the context of their group. The biggest disappointment I had was that it is kind of implied that this is about a book club, titles of books are mentioned at the beginning of the chapters...but there's no talk about the books. And since I love books about books, this part was a letdown. Overall, I did enjoy my reading time and would recommend this book and author.
Sylvia Burned the inside of her arm taking the muffins out of the oven that she had made. Now she was forty six and Sylvia and Minnie had been four years old when their aunt used to let them help roll out the dough for the rugelach. Minnie and Sylvia had been accountants together for twenty five years. Now Sylvia owned Sylvia’s Supper. A woman had just called to have a dinner catered. Her biggest competitor had a fire and had to bail on some jobs that had been already accepted. But business has been slow and she needed the job and money. Sylvia's sister minnie had died from breast cancer and Sylvia missed her everyday. Cindy slid while getting on the bus because of her four inch heel on her boots. If eddie were there he would have said it was cindy’s fault for wearing the boots but than would have added they made her look hot. But eddie was home on the couch waiting for her to get home and ask what was for dinner. Cindy hated working at Midnight Scandals- a lingerie store. Everyday cindy went to the hospital to see her sister Carly. Everyday Carly was always in a chair by the window looking out with no response to anything. Eddie said she didn’t have to go everyday bit cindy would not stop going to see her sister for that same hour everyday. Lise was a Professor and talking to her student John about his work. John was critical and the most critical of Danitra. Lise was teaching the writers workshop - an advanced single-genre course, Fifteen years ago Lise had received her MFA from the iowa Writers Workshop. She was supposed to be the Next Great Thing. At least the MFA earned her the right to teach at the University level. Sara was her sister and following her dream in Africa working for a Peace Corp type organization. She had an email from Sara and she again asked how it was going on the book Lise was suppose to be writing which had been her dream. Diana is an overweight British newlywed who has moved to the U S. She is not happy with her weight. She should do something about it. She wants to but…. Her sister is simply not there for her. Diana hopes to make some friends to be like sisters to her. Diana puts an ad in a local bookstore newsletter . This brings Diana, lise, cindy and Sylvia all together in a club but not really a book club as the other three women thought it was when they joined. The women decide to do what they have wanted to to do as in Lise’s case write a book and Diana to lose weight even if it’s by going to a doctor and having surgery.
I couldn’t really get into this book. This was confusing to me with the women being kind and supportive one minute and cruel and mean the next. This dragged for me at times and it just didn’t really keep my attention. I am sure others will enjoy it . But this just wasn’t for me.
