The last book written by the late Oscar Hijuelos, "Twain and Stanley” is an unusual, but satisfying book. Unusual, because so unlike most of Hijuelos’ work, and satisfying because of the depth of the insight it provides (albeit fictional) into the minds of Mark Twain and Henry Stanley, iconic figures of the late 19th century. The most luminous writing in the novel describes their time together in New Orleans and in Cuba. The descriptions of the Mississippi River are particularly beautiful.
