Joseph Merrick was nicknamed "The Elephant Man" due to having a combination of diseases that distorted and disfigured his body. This is a heartbreaking story of what happened to him during his young life at the hands of family and strangers alike as he was exploited for his differences. Eventually, Joseph Merrick found friendship with a doctor and lived his last few years in a hospital discussing books, writing poetry and living his life to the fullest.

Perhaps there are others, but this is the first children's book I've read on this topic, and it does the job admirably. The pictures and text sensitively address the history of this tragic figure.
