I honestly didn't know what to expect from this read, but I wasn't disappointed. Readers will enjoy this intriguing collection of stories. The stories will stay with readers long after they turn the last page.

Haunting seems an appropriate descriptor for this collection of stories linked by place, exploring the incomprehensible horrors that come out in the Southern summer heat. A breath of fresh air in the genre, it's so nice to read horror that's not written by, about, and for white men. The writing is excellent, lyrical, transporting. These stories are worth lingering over - the events in these stories are inexplicable and scary, but also normal, integral, accepted by the characters as inescapable facts of life. If that's not a metaphor, then I don't know what is.

I was interested in these because Ms. Due had won a Hugo and that a creepier tone is something I like. I’m not a huge anthology reader but I don’t regret this one. There is a penetrating sadness and sense of mystery to many of these stories with characters that reach out and grab you. As with all anthologies there are stronger and weaker stories but I didn’t rank them individually.

The more dystopian ones were my least favorites as frankly I’m so weary of the endless dystopic shorties. There are so many good ones in here. The first few set in Florida are evocative of the setting (having worked in that area). Themes of racism, disease and the human condition are woven through these. This was my first exposure to Ms. Due’s work and I hope to read more.

Loved all the stories here and was already a fan of Due's work. Her ability to build strong characters with a fantastical world always makes the work relatable.
