Mixed feelings about this book ... having learned that it was first published in 1988 I found it admirable that it predates the Dan Brown type of novel (and this author is a better writer than Brown). However, I found it somewhat too long, frankly unbelievable in places, and some of the characters were a bit stereotyped. That said, it was a fairly easy read, with some good historical parts. The number of characters is pretty astonishing, and if comparing with the popular Dan Brown type plots, then it's not a bad story at all. I do think however it would benefit from some editing down as I found myself skipping pages in parts, and.
